Verna Jean Gerritsen, age 89, passed away on October 21, 2024 and is at rest and finally home. She was born in Grand Rapids on September 9, 1935, to the late James and Viola (Nederveld) Slabbekoorn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Gerritsen, in 2019. Verna was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with and caring for her family, "keeping house" and working in her flower garden. She was a member of New Community Church and loved to read, especially her Bible and daily devotionals. Verna is survived by her children, Kristi Gerritsen, and John (Renee) Gerritsen; granddaughters, Meghan (Spencer) White and Madelynn Gerritsen; sisters-in-law, Lois Vandermeer and Marian Sytsma; and several cousins who were very special to her. Relatives and friends may visit with her family on Saturday, October 26, 2024 beginning at 10 AM at Van Strien Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield Ave NE. This will be followed by a graveside service held at 11 AM at Fairplains Cemetery, 1105 Knapp St. NE.
