Life Story / Obituary
Troy Ferris Johnston, age 36, of Grand Rapids, passed away on February 20, 2026, following a brief illness. A man known for his daring spirit and a touch of mischief, Troy left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
A Life of Adventure
Born at Blodgett Hospital on November 18, 1989, to Thomas and Connie (Ferris) Johnston, Troy famously held the title of the "older" twin—even though his brother, Travis, wasn't born until the following day. Growing up in Wyoming, Michigan, and attending Kelloggsville Schools, Troy was a natural-born daredevil. Along with Travis and their circle of friends, he was often the instigator of countless outdoor adventures.
His childhood was defined by the roar of engines and the great outdoors. Whether he was riding dirt bikes and snowmobiles "up north" or camping with family at Gun Lake, Troy was happiest when things were moving fast.
Hard Work & New Beginnings
Troy’s work began during his high school years. His first job at New Beginnings Restaurant ended abruptly when he broke his foot; in true twin fashion, Travis took over the role and never gave it back. Troy eventually found his stride in construction and ironworking, even getting the chance to work alongside his father for a time. He later spent several years at Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch in Lake Odessa before transitioning to Michigan Turkey in Grand Rapids, where he worked his way up to a management position.
Love and Simple Pleasures
It was through a mutual friend that Troy met Luana Higby. After several years of dating, the two were married on June 12, 2021, celebrating their union with a memorable honeymoon in Traverse City.
When he wasn't working, Troy found balance in the things he loved. He had a penchant for fast cars, high-end denim from The Buckle (especially his Rock Revival jeans), and the company of his beloved Frenchie dog, Ohana. He was a connoisseur of simple treats, frequently enjoying Hudsonville vanilla bean ice cream, Culver’s blueberry shakes, or a homemade smoothie to unwind after a stressful day.
Troy Ferris Johnston, age 36 of Grand Rapids, passed away February 20, 2026 following a short illness. Troy is survived by his wife, Luana; dad, Tom Johnston; twin brother, Travis Johnston; niece and nephew Hayden and Hailey Johnston; step-son Dayton (Rissa) Burns and their children, Analayah and Layana; brother-in-law, Mike (Catherine) Higby; sister-in-law Adriana “Dree” Higby; as well as several nieces and nephews; grandmother, Marjorie Ferris; aunts and uncles Jeff (Lisa) Ferris, Tammy Ferris, John (Kelly) Ferris, Jesus Cisneros, Yvonne “Bonnie” Tanis, Denny (Donna) Johnston, Tim (Denise) Johnston and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Johnston; aunt, Amanda Cisneros as well as several other aunts and uncles.
Friends and family are invited to gather to remember and celebrate Troy’s life on Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 1-3 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home - Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW.
