Life Story / Obituary
All who knew Timothy Kirkwood can certainly attest that he lived an adventurous life greatly enriched by the love of his family and friends. Tim’s greatest joy was found in the moments spent with those he loved so dearly. His bright and energetic presence was impossible to miss, and he served as a powerful role model of adventure, being yourself and having respect for our planet. Already greatly missed, Tim will be forever cherished by those who knew him best.
The mid 1960s were electrifying years to be alive in the United States of America. Humanity continued to rise to new heights with space exploration, and in the world of pop culture, iconic musical groups including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones dominated the world stage. Meanwhile, Tim and Bonnie (Fischer) Kirkwood of Grand Rapids, Michigan, were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their firstborn child. Their wait came to an end on May 25 of 1966, when the happy couple welcomed their son into the world at last. They gave their baby boy his father’s name, Timothy.
Growing up, Tim was very much a typical boy of his generation. He was raised in the family home on the West side of Grand Rapids alongside his three younger siblings, Jackie, Thomas and Jason. From a young age, He was a free spirit with a love for adventure and the outdoors which he inherited from his mother‘s side of the family. Whether he was casting a fishing line into his favorite lake, tearing down a trail on his dirt bike, riding his snowmobile through fresh snow, or simply enjoying nature, Tim felt most at home outside. Tim’s grandparents owned a cottage on Hamlin Lake in Ludington, Michigan which was the backdrop for many of Tim’s fondest memories. He lived life with a wild heart, embracing every opportunity to explore, laugh, and make memories.
Throughout his childhood, Tim attended local schools, including Alpine Elementary School. He continued his education as a student at Kenowa Hills High School. Tim played football for a season, but despite being quick on the field, an injury ended up taking him out of the sport. After high school, Tim move down to Florida, where he began building a life of his own. His path soon crossed with that of Sonia Aguilar, and the two were soon married. In 1992, expecting their first child, Rachelle. Tim and Sonia moved back to Grand Rapids in order to be closer to Tim’s family. The couple settled down on the West side of Grand Rapids to raise their growing family.
Of all the things Tim loved in life, his family was undoubtedly his greatest treasure. He was overjoyed to become a father to his three beloved children, Rachelle, Tim Robert, and Kory. He built a solid career for himself over the 18 years he spent working hard for Bosch, striving to provide for those who depended on him. When he wasn’t working, Tim loved spending quality time with his kids as well as his nieces and nephews. He often took them out to enjoy Blandford Nature Center while passing down his survival skills and expansive knowledge of the outdoors. The family enjoyed vacations to Ludington and many in the Upper Peninsula.
Tim’s family also included his nieces and nephews Danielle, Devyn, Justin, Collin, Han’s and Brian. More than happy to be the fun and mischievous uncle, Tim was often known to take the kids on late night adventures and fishing trips. He loved nothing more than experiencing nature and looking for deer at night. Later in life, Tim battled his way through all of the complications of jaw cancer to watch his family grow and flourish. He was thrilled to become a grandfather to Jayden, Maddex, Remington, Phoenix, and Rosabella. Tim enjoyed attending sporting events for his grandkids, and he was honored to instill his love and knowledge for the outdoors in the next generation.
Just like his own father, Tim was the kind of man who knew someone everywhere he went. He could strike up a good conversation with anyone and was a friend to many over the years. In his free time, Tim enjoyed watching TV. He liked everything from documentaries and programs on the History Channel to Westerns and outdoor shows. Even as his health continued to decline, Tim’s energy stayed high, and his sense of humor never left him. He always made sure, recently more than ever, that his friends and family members knew just how much they were appreciated and loved.
As we gather to reflect on the life and legacy of Timothy Kirkwood, it is easy to celebrate a man who held a special place in so many hearts. Known for his adventurous soul, Tim had a passion for power sports and never outgrew the excitement of riding dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and anything that could take him on his next adventure. He appreciated life’s simple pleasures. The peace of a quiet morning on the water, the thrill of the ride, and the company of those he loved. His generosity was evident in the way he went above and beyond to care for others. Tim savored each and every second shared with his family and friends. He was a shining example of being yourself and enjoying life. Although life will not be the same without Tim here with us, he lives on in the stories we share, the quiet moments spent in nature, and the precious memories we hold close to our hearts.
Timothy Thomas Kirkwood, age 60, passed away July 9, 2026. Tim is survived by his dad and step-mom, Tim and Lolly Kirkwood; his children (and grandchildren): Rachelle Kirkwood (Jayden and Maddex), Robert & Nakoma Kirkwood (Remington, Phoenix, and Rosabella), and Kory Kirkwood; his sister, Jackie and Joe Zickus (Danielle and Devyn); brother, Jason Kirkwood (Justin and Collin); step-sisters, Danielle and Jim Hoeg (Evie, Clara and Ben), Kimberly Kozminski and Beth Czaban; as well as great nieces, nephews and cousins.
Tim was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Fischer; Stepfather, Thomas Lowery; and brother, Thomas Kirkwood.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in imagining Tim where he always belonged surrounded by nature, a fishing pole in hand, the sound of an dirt bike engine nearby, and endless trails stretching out before him. His adventurous spirit will continue to live on in every cast, every ride, every snowy trail, and in the hearts of all who loved him.
Friends are invited to gather to remember and celebrate Tim’s life on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 from 5-8 PM at his childhood home, 890 Kinney Avenue NW in Walker, Michigan. Please bring a chair and a memory to share as there will be a time to publicly share memories beginning at 6PM.
