KIENSTRA, OP, Sr. Margaret of Grand Rapids, born in Wood River, Illinois, entered eternal life on September 26, 2025. She was 98 years old and a Dominican Sister for 71 years.

Sr. Margaret pursued her education with dedication and faith. She attended Webster College in Webster Groves, Missouri, and later studied at St. Louis University. After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, she went on to study theology at St. Paul Seminary in Saginaw. She later completed a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University.

Before entering the Dominican Sisters on June 20, 1953, Sr. Margaret traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, an experience that broadened her perspective and deepened her appreciation for the beauty of God’s world.

Sr. Margaret devoted her ministry to Catholic education, serving as both teacher and principal in several schools. Her longest mission was at St. Joseph’s, Wright, where she joyfully and faithfully served for 19 years as principal and teacher. A woman of few words and few needs, her warm and inviting smile spoke volumes, making all who knew her feel welcomed and cared for.

She loved her Dominican life and remained deeply grateful for the support, encouragement, and friendships she received throughout her journey. Sr. Margaret was dearly loved, and she will be profoundly missed by her community, her family, and all whose lives she touched.

Sr. Margaret is survived by her brother Jerry Kienstra, other family, friends, and members of her Dominican Community.

Sr. Margaret will repose at Marywood Chapel of the Word, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with a Remembering Service on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 9:00 am and a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sr. Margaret’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
