A wonderful husband, brother, uncle, and friend to many, Ruben Canales lived his life to the fullest. An avid golfer, he enjoyed spending time outdoors and especially on the Kaufman Golf Course. Whatever Ruben set out to do, he gave it his all. Gone too soon, Ruben will be deeply missed and leaves behind a warm collection of memories to be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

His story begins on August 13, 1952 when Ruben was welcomed home by Lazaro and Angela (Jimenez) Canales in Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco Mexico. Born the second oldest of eight children, his birth brought great joy to his hard-working parents.

Ruben grew up in a rural area in central Mexico. His father worked in agriculture and as a result, Ruben's childhood was spent helping in the fields. He and each of his siblings walked or rode a donkey to school. From a young age, Ruben dreamed of living in America. He left school after the sixth grade to enter into the world of work. By 1970, when Ruben was eighteen, he left Mexico for The States. He was the first of his family to leave his country. He arrived in Texas where he was able to find a job. A dedicated worker, just two years later, he drew the attention of another man who told him about a promising opportunity in Michigan. The job included a place to stay and food to eat, so Ruben took a risk and packed up for his move to Michigan. Later he encouraged his brother to join him in America. Ruben was proud of the hard work that brought him to America and often sent money back to his family in Mexico.

Around this time, he met Rosie Barajas who was waitressing at her uncle’s local restaurant. They both took notice of one another but wouldn’t meet again until later at a local dance hall. Ruben spotted her across the dancefloor. He worked up the nerve to ask her to dance and the rest was history! Unable to find a clergyman to marry them, they were married by the Justice of the Peace. As newlyweds, they rented an apartment in the Burton Heights area. Ruben continued his work at BilMar Foods and Rosie remained a waitress. After thirty-five years together, they were delighted to have a formal ceremony at St. Andrew Cathedral. They lived a beautiful life together.

Ruben had a successful career. He worked at Williams Form in quality control before he landed at Kelvinator working in assembly. He later worked as a finisher for Kendall Furniture before heading to Boars Head working in production until he retired in 2019. As hard as he worked, he played equally as hard! Ruben loved to bowl and would practice tirelessly until he perfected his game and was able to bowl a perfect score! Now that he had made his goal, he longed for another hobby. Some of his co-workers invited him to join them for a game of golf. Ruben had no experience with the game which made it easy for him to be made fun of for his lack of skills. Ruben practiced and practiced until he became better. Soon he began entering tournaments and played in the Latino Classic, Shooter Classic, and the Moose Travel Golf League, as well as in Mexico, South Carolina, and all over Michigan! As a senior, he played in the Great Lake Senior Golf Association. His home course would become Kaufman Golf Course. Most of his hard-earned money went to affording trips so he could play more golf!

Ruben worked hard, helped others, and lived by the philosophy of not taking life too seriously. He loved his homecooked meals and loved snacking on sunflower seeds. When he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, he kept his optimism and focused on his simple pleasures in life. He also survived his battle with kidney cancer in 2016. In May of 2021, he returned home from the golf course not feeling like himself. He went outside for a bit and then came back in and told Rosie it was time to head to the hospital. Sadly, he was diagnosed with uncurable glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Ruben agreed to the treatment yet the disease increased. Blessed with a faithful heart, he lived and loved without limits. Sadly, he is gone, yet his joyous heart and quiet strength will live on eternally in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Ruben Canales, age 69, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 19, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lazaro and Angela Canales, in-laws, Hubert and Rosita Barajas; brothers-in-law, Antonio Vera and Hubert Barajas Jr.; and nephew, Victor Barajas. Ruben is survived by Rosie, his wife of 49 years; siblings, Efren (Venancia) Canales, Simona Canales, Jose (Rosio) Canales, Jesus (Antonia) Canales, Felipe (Olivia) Canales, Lasaro Canales and Maria (Martin) Victorio; Rosie’s siblings, Maria (Salvador) Fernandez, Arturo (Toni) Barajas, Rocky Barajas, Dora Barajas, Abel (Dora) Barajas and Miguel (Tushawan) Barajas; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephew. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at the Cathedral of St Andrew, 215 Sheldon Blvd SE. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, February 23, from 2-4 PM, followed by a Rosary, at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, 2120 Lake Michigan Dr. NW. Maravilloso marido, hermano, tío y amigo de muchas personas, Rubén Canales vivió su vida al máximo. Le encantaba jugar al golf y disfrutar del tiempo en la naturaleza, especialmente en el campo de golf de Kaufman. Cualquier cosa que hizo Rubén, lo dio todo. Se fue de este mundo demasiado pronto y se le echará de menos muy profundamente. Está dejando atrás una bella colección de memorias que todos que lo amaba y conocía van a apreciar.

Su historia empieza el 13 de agosto de 1952, cuando sus padres Lázaro y Ángela (Jimenez) Canales le dieron la bienvenida a casa en Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, México. El segundo de ocho hijos, el nacimiento de Rubén les dió mucha alegría a sus padres bien trabajadores.

Rubén creció en un área rural de México central. Su padre trabajó en la agricultura, cuyo resultado fue que Rubén pasaba su niñez ayudando a su padre en el campo. Él y cada uno de sus hermanos o caminaban o montaban en burro para llegar a la escuela. Desde una edad joven, Rubén soñaba con vivir en los Estados Unidos. Salió de la escuela después del sexto grado para entrar en el mundo del trabajo. En 1970, cuando Rubén tenía dieciocho años, se fue de México para los Estados Unidos. Fue el primero de su familia en salir de la patria. Llegó a Tejas donde encontró trabajo. Trabajador dedicado, solamente dos años después, le llamó la atención de un señor que le dijo de una oportunidad prometedora en el estado de Michigan. La oportunidad le ofreció no solamente trabajo, sino también alojamiento y comida, así que Rubén corrió el riesgo y empacó sus cosas para mudarse a Michigan. Luego, le animó a su hermano a juntarse con él en los Estados Unidos. Rubén estaba orgulloso del trabajo duro que hizo y muy a menudo mandaba dinero a su familia en México.

Alrededor de este tiempo, conoció a Rosie Barajas que trabajaba de mesera en el restaurante de su tío. Se fijaron uno al otro pero no se volverían a conocer hasta un tiempo después en un baile. Rubén la divisó al otro lado de la pista de baile. Encontró la confianza para pedirle un baile, y ¡lo demás es la historia! Como no pudieron encontrar a un clérigo, fueron al Juez de Paz para casarse. Recién casados, alquilaron un apartamento en el área de Burton Heights. Rubén continuó trabajando en BilMar Foods y Rosie permaneció trabajando en el restaurante. Después de treinta y cinco años juntos, celebraron una ceremonía formal de matrimonio en la Catedral de San Andrés. Vivieron una vida bella juntos.

Rubén tuvo una carrera exitosa. Trabajó en Williams Form en el departamento de control antes de empezar a trabajar en Boars Head, trabajando en la producción hasta su jubilación en 2019. Lo duro que trabajaba, ¡jugaba igual de duro! A Rubén le encantaba jugar al boliche y practicaba sin cansar hasta que marcó un juego perfecto. Ahora que realizó su meta en el boliche, quiso encontrar un pasatiempo nuevo. Algunos de sus colegas le invitaron a un juego de golf. Rubén no tuvo experiencia con el deporte, el hecho de que sus colegas le hicieron la burla muy fácilmente. Pero Rubén practicaba y practicaba hasta mejorarse. Pronto, empezó a entrar en torneos y jugaba en los torneos Latino Classic, Shooter Classic, y la Moose Travel Golf League, y también jugaba en México, Carolina del Sur, y por todas partes de Michigan. Una vez jubilado, jugaba en la Asociación de Golf de Jubilados de Los Lagos Grandes. Su campo de golf de casa era el campo de Kaufman. La mayoría de su dinero duramente ganado gastó en viajes para jugar al golf lo más posible.

Rubén trabajaba duro, ayudaba a los demás, y vivía por la filosofía de no tomar muy en serio la vida. Le encantaban las comidas caseras y las semillas de girasol de botana. Cuando recibió el diagnóstico de cáncer de la próstata en 2014, mantuvo su actitud positiva y se enfocó en los placeres sencillos de la vida. Sobrevivió a otra batalla del cáncer del hígado en 2016. Un día en mayo de 2021, regresó del campo de golf pero no se sentía como él mismo. Se fue afuera por un ratito, y cuando entró la casa otra vez, le dijo a Rosie que era tiempo de ir al hospital. Tristemente, recibió el diagnóstico de un glioblastoma incurable, una forma agresiva de cáncer. Rubén dió consentimiento al tratamiento; sin embargo, la enfermedad empeoró. Bendito con un corazón fiel, vivió y amó sin límite. Tristemente, falleció, pero su corazón alegre y su esfuerzo quieto vivirán eternamente en los corazones de todos que lo conocían y lo amaban.

Sr. Rubén Canales, a la edad de 69 años, de Grand Rapids, Michigan, fue a juntarse con su señor, el sábado 19 de febrero de 2022. Fue precedido en la muerte por sus padres, Lázaro y Ángela Canales, sus suegros Hubert y Rosita Barajas; sus cuñados Antonio Vera y Hubert Barajas Jr.; y su sobrino Victor Barajas. Le sobreviven su esposa Rosie, su mujer de 49 años; sus hermanos Efren (Venancia) Canales, Simona Canales, José (Rosio) Canales, Jesus (Antonia) Canales) Felipe (Olivia) Canales, Lasaro Canales y María (Martín) Victorio; los hermanos de Rosie, María (Salvador) Fernandez, Arturo (Toni) Barajas, Rocky Barajas, Dora Barajas, Abel (Dora) Barajas, y Miguel (Tushawan) Barajas; y muchos sobrinos, sobrinas nietas y un sobrino nieto. Se celebrará una Misa de Memoria a las 10 de la mañana, el 24 de febrero 2022, en la Catedral de San Andrés, 215 Sheldon Blvd SE.
