Roger Jack Ritsema, a man whose laughter and kindness could fill any room, departed this world on June 15, 2024. He was a dedicated family man and devout Christian, whose every action was guided by his unwavering faith. His playful nature and wisdom made him an adored figure to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born on May 3, 1936, Roger entered a world coming out from the shadows of the Great Depression and stepping into a hopeful future. It was a time when America was embracing the joys of jazz, and the first color movies were beginning to dazzle audiences. This period of resilience and optimism formed the backdrop of Roger’s early years, characteristics that would come to define his personality. Growing up in the close-knit neighborhood of Hogan St SW in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Roger thrived under the watchful eyes of his parents, Fred and Nellie (Diekman) Ritsema, and a slew of rambunctious siblings.

Fred, a dedicated owner of a plastering company, and Nellie, a diligent homemaker, instilled in Roger a strong work ethic and the importance of family. An active household, Fred and Nellie ensured that their children experienced a rich and vibrant upbringing. As the fifth of eight Ritsema children, Roger's early years were filled with the boisterous energy of his brothers and sisters. They played baseball in the streets with neighborhood friends, fostering a love for sports that would stay with Roger throughout his life. He attended Southwest Christian School, Baxter Christian, and ultimately graduated from Grand Rapids Christian in 1954. It was here that Roger’s love for sports blossomed, becoming a varsity tennis player, cross-country runner, and choir singer.

In his younger years, Roger took every chance to indulge his passion for athletics. He was drawn to the excitement and camaraderie of competition, something that would remain constant through all stages of his life. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and underwent rigorous training at the Great Lakes Training Center. Stationed mainly at Norfolk, Virginia, but sailing to many places in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, Italy and Europe. Roger devoted two years to active duty, a period during which he developed a robust sense of discipline and patriotism.

Roger’s life took a pivotal turn when he met Charlene, or Char as she was fondly known, at the Citywide Hymn Sing at John Ball Park. Char, a charming bank teller, found in Roger a partner whose faith and joy matched her own. Their five-year courtship culminated in a beautiful wedding on April 17, 1964, at Bethel Reformed Church. Their love story began with a honeymoon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the first of what would become many cherished travel adventures together.

Professionally, Roger ventured into the entrepreneurial world, partnering in a commercial contract company specializing in plastering, drywall, and acoustical tile—an homage to his father's trade. Alongside his professional accomplishments, Roger and Char established a wonderful family. Cynthia came into their lives in 1966, followed by Christine in 1968, and Todd in 1971. Roger delighted in being a present and actively involved father, imparting his love for sports and the values of Christian faith.

A lover of traditions, Roger sang in the church choir, served as a deacon, and even led youth groups. Bethel Reformed and Third Reformed Church were more than just places of worship; they were communities he helped nurture and grow. His musical affinity was particularly close to traditional hymns, which he sang with a resonant passion that was both inspiring and comforting to his congregation.

The River Bank Run and the Grand Rapids Track Club were testaments to Roger’s love for running, a passion he discovered at age 40 that led him to compete in marathons across the U.S., including the prestigious Boston and Chicago Marathons. Roger took great pride on being an active member of River Bank Run race committee for thirty five years. Roger’s influence extended to his family, many of whom took up running or joined races fueled by his infectious enthusiasm. Running was Roger’s way of connecting with others, forming deep friendships and family bonds that transcended miles.

Roger's playful spirit found an outlet in the tennis court he had in his backyard. It became a haven for family and friends, where games of tennis and home run derby were regular pastimes. Roger’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored these moments. Roger was also an avid supporter of their school and sports events, always present, ever cheering, and continually proud. Travel was another delight that Roger enjoyed, whether it was the magic of Walt Disney World, the stunning beaches of Hawaii, or the countless road trips to Detroit and other cities to cheer on the Detroit Tigers or to run a race.

Despite his numerous hobbies and pursuits, what truly made Roger stand out was his extraordinary capacity to love and bring joy. Sweetland chocolates and Bill Knapps’ treats were staples that always brightened his day and those around him. He was a fun-loving, kind, and tender-hearted man who prioritized relationships above all.

In the twilight of his life, Roger remained the beacon of his family, guiding them with his humor, wisdom, and unyielding faith. His final days were marked by the same joy he instilled during his vibrant youth, leaving a legacy intertwined with laughter, love, and light.

As Roger’s presence graced his family's lives, they would forever remember him through the simple pleasures he cherished. Whether it was running a race, cheering at a game, savoring a sweet treat, or humming a hymn, Roger's memory will live on, etched in the daily rhythms and joys of those he held dear. Roger Jack Ritsema may have left this earthly realm, but his spirit continues to inspire, reminding all who knew him that a life filled with love, faith, and a good sense of humor is the greatest blessing of all.

Roger Jack Ritsema, age 88 of Grand Rapids, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 15, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Charlene; their children Cynthia (Jim) Kvasnovsky, Christine (Rick) Torres, Todd (Kristi) Ritsema; grandchildren: Stephen (Danielle) Ritsema, Jannelle Brawner, Brendan Torres, Abby Torres, AJ Wawee, Sophie Ritsema, Carter Ritsema; great grandchildren: Eliza Mis, Ellsie Ritsema, Easten Ritsema; his sister, Susanne (Robert) Vanden Bosch; brothers Herbert (Jan), James (Jean), and William (Verna) Ritsema; brother -in-law Larry Rudnik.
