In Loving Memory of Pedro Ramos

Easygoing, kindhearted, and always willing to lend a helping hand, Pedro Ramos lived a life centered on faith, family, and friendship. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, often becoming the heart of every gathering with his warm smile, quick wit, and infectious laughter. Pedro believed in leading with love, treating each day as a blessing and every person as a friend. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, and unwavering love that will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Pedro was born on June 29, 1965, in Buenavista, a small rural community in the municipality of Villa Juárez, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. He was the middle child of Gregorio Ramos and Zenaida Pérez Yáñez’s eleven children. Growing up in a close-knit family, Pedro enjoyed a happy childhood filled with the occasional bit of mischief. No matter where life took them, the bond between his siblings remained strong throughout the years.

From a young age, Pedro developed a deep love for soccer. Whether he was playing on the field or cheering from the sidelines, the game remained one of his lifelong passions. He especially enjoyed following the FIFA World Cup and sharing his excitement for the sport with family and friends.

After completing his education, Pedro entered the seminary, believing he might be called to the priesthood. It wasn’t long before he realized God had a different path planned for him. That path began with a simple dinner invitation, where he met Leticia Alvarado. Pedro and Leticia began dating, and in time they were married, beginning a beautiful life together built on love, faith, and family.

After making several trips to the United States to visit relatives and friends, Pedro and Leticia decided to make America their home. They moved to Chicago with their first daughter, Nereida, where they welcomed their second daughter, Nancy. Although grateful for their time there, after visiting West Michigan, they knew they had found the right place. In 1996, the family settled on the west side of Grand Rapids, where their youngest daughter, Nallely, completed their family.

Pedro embraced every opportunity to provide for those he loved. He was never afraid of hard work and often took on extra jobs so his daughters could have opportunities he never had. Blessed with many talents and practical skills, he was always the first to volunteer when someone needed help. Whether family, friends, or neighbors, Pedro gave generously of his time without expecting anything in return.

While he worked tirelessly, Pedro understood that life was about much more than making a living. His greatest joy came from spending time with the people he loved. He cherished being outdoors, whether tending his garden, fishing until sunset, or preparing meals for family and friends. His daughters will always remember waking to the comforting aroma of their father’s homemade breakfasts filling the house. He loved experimenting with new recipes, and although he and Leticia both enjoyed cooking, each had their own unique flavors and signature dishes. In those early years, when authentic Mexican groceries were difficult to find in West Michigan, family trips to Chicago became treasured traditions, combining visits with loved ones and stocking up on favorite foods from home.

Becoming a grandfather was one of Pedro’s greatest blessings. His grandchildren brought him endless joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them. Whether buying them toys, inviting them into the garden to pick peppers and watermelons, giving them rides, or simply making them laugh, his love for them was unconditional. They were truly the light of his life.

In February of this year, Pedro was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. He faced every challenge with remarkable courage, determination, and hope. Even after surgery and treatment, he never stopped fighting. Though doctors eventually shared that time was limited, Pedro continued to meet each day with strength, faith, and love for his family. Sadly, the disease progressed far more quickly than anyone expected.

Although our time with Pedro was far too short, every moment shared with him is a gift that will be treasured forever. His life reminds us that true wealth is measured not by what we own, but by the love we give, the kindness we show, and the memories we create with those around us.

As we celebrate Pedro’s life, may we honor his legacy by caring for our families, serving others with generous hearts, embracing life’s challenges with courage, cheering on those we love, casting a fishing line into quiet waters, tending our gardens with patience, sharing laughter around the table, and gathering over a home-cooked meal. In living as he lived—with humility, generosity, and love—we ensure that Pedro’s spirit continues to inspire generations to come.
