Nel (Nellie) Kastner

Completing the earthly phase of her life’s journey, Nel was welcomed to her heavenly home by Christ her Savior and Lord on February 19, 2019.

Nel was born on January 17, 1931 and was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Jennie Schrier, her devoted husband of 49 years William Kastner and son Mark Kastner.

She is survived by her sons, Craig and Steven Jon (Ina), daughter in law Brenda and three precious grandchildren, Benjamin, Nathanael and Lana, sisters Helen Belder, Jae Loucks, Kay (Neil) Molenaar, Irene Surgeon, and very special friend, Gene Raymond Mitchell along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nel was born in Fremont, Michigan. She graduated from Fremont High School and the Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed in the emergency and trauma center for 25 years before retiring and becoming involved in numerous volunteer projects. People and flowers rated high among Nel’s passions.

A memorial service will be held March 23 at 11 a.m. with a lunch to follow at the First United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids where she was a long time member with Reverend Robert Huntley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church Mission Fund, church camp scholarships, or organizations of your choice working for peace and justice.
