Life Story / Obituary
When looking back on the life of Michael Kwiatkowski, it is easy to see both his unwavering strength and his unconditional love for his family. He faced every challenge that came his way with a spirit of fierce determination, and he was always willing to work hard. Nothing brought Mike greater joy than spending time with his loved ones, no matter how simple the moments. His legacy is one of resilience, faithfulness, and courage in the face of adversity. Deeply loved, Mike will be forever held close in the hearts of those who knew him best.
The 1950s were among some of the most influential years for the United States. The economy was flourishing following the end of WWII a short time before, and the baby boom was underway. It was on January 2, 1955, that Michael Coon made his entrance into the world in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
From a young age, Mike was dealt a difficult hand. His biological parents were abusive, and Mike was removed from their care and given medical treatment. It was found that he had suffered bleeding on his brain, and doctors believed he would not live very long. However, Mike was a warrior from the start, and he beat the odds time and time again. Though he would have developmental disabilities due to the abuse he suffered, he would go on to live a full and happy life.
Not long after, Mike was welcomed into the hearts and home of Walter and Virginia Kwiatkowsi, his longtime foster parents. Walter and Virginia legally changed Mike’s name, making him an official member of the family. His brother, Paul, was born when Mike was 2 years old. The Kwiatkowski family lived on Kentfield Street in Wyoming, Michigan. Walter worked for the city of Grand Rapids, and he enjoyed bringing Mike and Paul to play at the local city parks. They would often play in the shallow area of the Garfield Park pool.
Growing up, Mike attended special education classes at Godwin schools. He completed all of his classes and graduated with a 6th grade education, eager to see what the future had in store for him. He later attended adult education classes through the Hope Network, and he also did piecework in the workshops. Mike would retire from his work at Hope Network just after his 65th birthday, leaving behind a fulfilling career that brought him so much joy.
Of all the things Mike loved in life, he cherished his family above all else. He was forever grateful for his chosen parents, Walter and Virginia. Mike’s mother passed away in 1988, followed by his father in 1992. Paul then became Mike’s guardian, and Mike found new happiness in the local adult foster care home. Paul was honored to be Mike’s guardian, and he continually advocated and cared for him. Later in life, Mike was thrilled to become an uncle to his nephew, Greg. The two enjoyed playing checkers together. Mike always considered himself blessed to be surrounded by so many loved ones.
Never one to sit still for long, Mike pursued many hobbies to stay busy in his free time. He participated in sports teams at Garfield Park with the Grand Rapids Catholic Church Diocese. Mike was an excellent bowler and would frequently score up to 300. His favorite foods included sweetcorn and the Chicken Dinner and Olive Burger from Mr. Burger. Mike was a math wiz, and he enjoyed singing in the choir at St. Pius X Catholic Church. He sometimes attended a local Lutheran Church along with several peers from his AFC home. Mike was an avid fan of football and the Detroit Lions. He would often watch Sunday night football with his brother, Paul. Mike was always happiest when spending time with his loved ones.
As family and friends can certainly attest, Michael Kwiatkowski truly understood the secret to a life well lived. He was a shining example of loyalty and honesty. A devoted son, brother, and uncle, Mike was a friend to many and beloved by all. His genuine love for those around him left an impact on all those he met. Though he will be dearly missed, Mike leaves behind a priceless legacy that his loved ones will be proud to carry on in his footsteps.
