With kindness, warmth, and a servant's heart, Melanie TerBeek lived a life rooted in faith, family, and friends. She embraced each day and each person with open arms, offering compassion, warmth, and genuine care. Whether supporting her family, volunteering in her community, or turning strangers into friends, Melanie found true joy in serving others. Though our days with her were far too few, Melanie left a lasting impact on all who were blessed to know her. A cherished wife, mother, sister, and friend, Melanie will always be remembered by those she loved so dearly.

The 1970s were a decade of profound change and uncertainty in the United States. Marked by the end of the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and an energy crisis, the era also saw the passage of important environmental protections such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. At the same time, American culture was rapidly evolving, with shifts in fashion and social norms reflecting the mood of the nation. Amid this transformative period, Larry Cornell and Debra Anes joyfully welcomed their daughter, Melanie Ann Cornell, on May 30, 1972, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Melanie grew up in Stanwood, Michigan. She shared a special bond with her grandmother, JoAnn, with whom she shared a birthday. As the oldest child, Melanie was a wonderful big sister to her brothers, Ron and Tom, and her half-sister, Danielle. Much of Melanie's childhood was spent camping with her family and playing outside. One of her fond memories was building pine needle houses in the summer. She also shared special relationships with her aunts, Laurie, Janet, and Kendra, who were like big sisters to her.

She attended Stanwood Elementary School and later Morley Stanwood High School, where she was a cheerleader and spent her free time babysitting. After graduating in 1990, Melanie continued her education at Grand Rapids Community College. While commuting to college, she befriended a Rapid bus driver, Marvin TerBeek, who would later introduce her to his son, Jeffrey.

Melanie and Jeff’s first date included dinner at Schelde’s on 28th Street, followed by a movie. This was the beginning of a love story that led to their marriage on August 14, 1993 at Fair Haven Church in Jenison. Following a reception at the UAW hall on Alpine Ave, the bride and groom enjoyed a two-night stay at the Amway Grand Hotel. A year later, they took a honeymoon/one year anniversary camping trip to Niagara Falls.

The newlyweds settled into marriage in Comstock Park before constructing a house in Kent City and eventually settling in Sparta. Melanie and Jeff were blessed with four earthly children: Brittney, Trevor, Lindsey, and Claire; and one heavenly baby, Ethan. Melanie's kids were the center of her world and she devoted herself to providing them with a loving and supportive home.

She loved staying busy with her kids and volunteered as much as she could, pouring herself into every role. She was a dance mom, rocket cheer coach, Boy Scout den leader, Girl Scout North Kent Director and troop leader, and band treasurer and vice president. She was also very active in her church. She was deeply involved in the children’s ministry, having served in every classroom with kids ages six months to sixth grade. Melanie also volunteered as the set director for FX or "The Family Experience" productions and at Lean on Me Outreach passing out food boxes. She also helped to launch an Awana program at church where she was a leader, events director, and secretary, which she brought with her to City Church Sparta where she became the Awana Ministry Director. She lived a life of service, rarely slowing down, with a calendar full of ways to give back.

Family traditions were deeply meaningful to Melanie, especially the holidays. Every holiday was spent with family. Christmas Eve was usually spent with extended family decorating cookies and having a wrapping paper fight. She also organized an ornament passing activity for her children. Recently, Christmas morning was spent with biscuits and gravy for breakfast and opening presents at home. More traditions she enjoyed include playing card/board games, camping, and going on cruises, day trips, and vacations together. In quiet times, Melanie enjoyed crocheting, doing puzzles, and watching the birds by her feeders. She also loved visiting lighthouses.

Melanie also dedicated her professional life to serving others. She began her career as a secretary at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and later worked at Old Kent Bank where she had many fond memories. She ran an in-home daycare when her children were younger, and later became the primary caregiver for both of Jeff’s parents. Toward the end of her life, Melanie worked in medical billing with Med-1 and in childcare at City Church Rockford.

Even throughout her battle with cancer, Melanie's strength remained unwavering. She met each day with faith, love, and a quiet resilience that inspired everyone around her. Determined to live every moment to the fullest, Melanie continued to work until the week before her death and enjoyed a family cruise the week before that. Melanie's journey is a testament to her enduring faith, perseverance, and unconditional love.

As we face the future in the absence of Melanie's steadfast companionship, may we find much comfort in our many treasured memories of the woman we were so blessed to know. We honor her by carrying forward the values she lived so beautifully. In every moment we lead with our hearts, share our gifts and talents in service of others, embrace everyone with love and compassion, gather around a bonfire, ensure our loved ones are well cared for, and share our favorite moments with our favorite people, we keep Melanie's memory alive while inspiring others as she inspired each of us.

Melanie Ann TerBeek, age 53, peacefully entered her heavenly home on April 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a brave 14-month battle with cancer. She is survived by the love of her life, Jeffrey TerBeek, and is lovingly remembered by her children: Brittney, Trevor, Lindsey, and Claire TerBeek. Preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Ethan, Melanie is further survived by her siblings, Ronald Cornell, Thomas (Katie) Cornell, and Danielle (Dean) Baldwin; her stepmother, Ann Cornell; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at City Church Rockford, 3233 10 Mile Rd NE, Rockford, MI 49341. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to City Kids Rockford or Gift of Life of Michigan.
