Life Story / Obituary
For 98 years, Mary Alice Logan lived a long and fruitful life, and never ceased in thanking her Lord for each and every day she was given. With a faithful heart, she served the Lord and was a loving example of His goodness. Born at home in the small city of Hastings, Michigan on June 14, 1913, Mary was one of 11 children born to Verne and Dena (Kovers) Curtiss. During her earlier years, she was cared for by her grandmother as her mother was occasionally quite ill, unable to fend for the family. They moved often from farm to farm, but no matter where they lived, Mary had to walk a good distance to school each day. Like most young people of the times, she completed school through the eighth grade. In her youth she was musically inclined and loved singing alongside her family.
As a young woman, Mary came to Grand Rapids and lived in a boarding house while taking on cleaning jobs for families. Her world was blessed when she met a handsome young man named Raymond Logan. After dating and falling in love, they were eventually married in a home setting during the late 1930s. Before long she had three wonderful daughters to love, Luella, Barbara and Linda. Mary made a good home for Raymond and their girls. In her younger years she was very active with the Berean Baptist Church, and later became a faithful member of Standale Baptist Church. To Mary, her ultimate desire was to teach her children about Jesus and the importance of serving Him.
Mary loved canning a variety of fruits and vegetables for her family. A devoted wife and dedicated mother, she'd do anything to benefit her family. She was a great cook and loved fishing. After cooking it to perfection, she savored the joy of sitting down to a nice meal of her fresh catch alongside her family to enjoy. Before retiring, Raymond 's job at times took him to other parts of the world, and Mary was fortunate to travel with him from time to time. They traveled to England, Spain, and also took a special anniversary trip to Hawaii. Soon after he retired, they bought a home in Florida. For 15 years they wintered there and made many new friends which became like family. Mary found solace through her love of bird watching and she collected pictures of them, as well.
In 1980 after the death of her beloved, Raymond, Mary moved to an apartment in Muskegon near her daughter, Barbara. She later moved to an assisted living facility in Hudsonville, and eventually returned to Muskegon where she began living at the Brookhaven Medical Care Facility. During Easter this year, Mary contracted a respiratory virus and her health quickly diminished. On Sunday, April 15, 2012, Mary met her Heavenly Father with her loving family by her side. Assured with the knowledge that she was a special child of God, Mary died with the comfort of knowing she would again see her children in Heaven one day. A faithful, Christian women who loved her Lord and Savior, Mary will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Luella (John) Grooters of McCormick, South Carolina, Barbara (John) Stevens of Fruitport, Michigan, and Linda (LeRoy) Troxel of Sophia, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and step-grandchildren. Mrs. Logan reposes at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home–Van’t Hof Chapel where relatives and friends may meet her family on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 2:00 PM until the service begins at 3:00 PM with Dr. Bob Lanz officiating. Interment in Rosedale Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to Cornerstone University. To read more about Mary's life and to sign her online guest book, please visit www.lifestorynet.com.
