Life Story / Obituary
Near and dear to the heart of Martha Kowalski was the family she adored and the blessing of numerous friends. Her life was enriched in countless ways, yet she added much to the lives around her. A woman of faith, Martha lived fully and completely at every opportunity, and for these things she was truly thankful. Deeply missed, only the fondest of thoughts will be remembered when recalling the life of Martha Kowalski.
Nestled in the riverfront community of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Martha's story began in the year 1931 as difficult days of the Great Depression created a jobless rate of nearly four million. Yet even as unemployment skyrocketed, many remained hopeful and looked toward the future. People across the nation were in awe as New York City opened the Empire State Building, and celebrated as the Star-Spangled banner became the nation's anthem. For Adam Thomas and Frances Helen (Zientarski) Kowalski, the days were made brighter when they welcomed the birth of their little girl, Martha Dorothy Kowalski on June 7, 1931 at Butterworth Hospital.
The baby of the family, young Martha grew up alongside her three brothers, Steve, Hank, Frank, and her sister, Ruth, with whom she shared a room. She was raised in a nice, quiet neighborhood, and they had renters upstairs which provided extra income so her mother could remain at home as a homemaker. Martha's parents instilled sound values and a good moral compass within their household. She was lovingly taught to lead her life in an upright manner, and to always “do right”. Her father was a strict man who kept his children in order. Although they never dared to pull a “fast one” on him, he was really a good dad who provided for his family. Hard working, he set a good example for his children to live by, and they felt very blessed.
During her youth, Martha walked six blocks to Sibley grade school and high school where her favorite subjects included math and english. She treasured fond memories of her father taking her family to Richmond Park for endless adventures and John Ball Park to swing on the swings. And it was always a treat when he'd buy them each a box of Cracker Jacks. Throughout the years, Martha's family had a dog, a goldfish and parakeets. Her dog wasn't allowed in the house as her mother liked everything in order, so it was difficult for Martha to teach her dog tricks. As a young girl, Martha was a member of the Girl Scouts and the Horizon Club. She also had a close, childhood friend named Nancy. She lived right next door and the girls often played and went to school together.
Even though Martha never married, she lived an abundant life filled with people, places, and things. Her first real job was with MichCon, and at the age of 62 she retired after 42 years with the company.
Martha kept very busy with her many friends, often taking in a movie, celebrating birthdays and chatting over lunch or dinner. She went on memorable vacations with her sister to see the sights in Florida, Tennessee, and Colorado which created wonderful memories for her. In her free time, Martha enjoyed taking walks, and only watched informative programs on TV. She was an avid reader and read quite a bit. When it came to her clothing of choice or the things she loved, Martha’s favorite colors included burgundy, pink, rose and green. She enjoyed a good pasta with meat dinner, and loved lemonade. Above all, Martha's favorite time of year was the Spring where she took in all the fresh blooms around her.
Well loved and appreciated, Martha Kowalski filled her days with the blessing of those around her, especially those from Associated Bible Students of Grand Rapids whom she considered her second family. She experienced much throughout her lifetime, and now embarks on her new journey in her heavenly home. Dearly missed, she will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Miss Martha D. Kowalski, aged 82, of Grand Rapids passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Hank, Frank, and Ruth; nephew, Lanny; and grandnephew, Ken. Martha is survived by her brother, Steve Kowalski; nieces and nephews, Arlyn, Walter (Carol), Carole (Chuck), and Bertha Kowalski; many grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service for Martha will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Heritage Life Story Funeral Homes, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW. Friends are invited to visit with her family from 6-8 PM on Friday at the funeral home. Interment in Rosedale Memorial Park.
