Life Story / Obituary
Loretta Lynn Riptoe, age 71, transitioned from this life on February 28, 2026. Lynn, as she preferred to be called, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan at Blodgett Memorial Hospital on December 18, 1954 to John and Ethel (Eaton) Riptoe. As a youth, Lynn was a member of Messiah Baptist Church, accepting Christ at age 9. Lynn graduated from Creston High School, navigating the turbulent beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement and the fight for equality, quality education, and inclusion. Lynn earned her bachelors in Psychology from Oakland University and her Masters in Public Administration from Western Michigan University. Lynn spent her career championing student success beginning as a peer counselor in summer programs like Upward Bound in Grand Rapids. Lynn accepted a position as Residence Hall Director at WMU where she helped countless students navigate the rigors of college life. She then accepted a position as Assistant Director of Upward Bound Trio Program at WMU. Lynn furthered her career with Student Affairs leadership positions at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as Assistant Director of Upward Bound and Lake Michigan College as the Director of the Educational Opportunities Center before retiring. For a brief period, Lynn lent her expertise and creativity to grant writing and other community resource endeavors at Bates Place in Grand Rapids.
Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel Riptoe, her infant brother, John Riptoe, Jr. and her grandparents, Robert and Annie Riptoe and Oscar and Nettie Eaton, and aunts and uncles. She is survived by her sisters, Cynthia Riptoe and Karen Riptoe, her niece, Lauren Mackie and uncle, Charles Murphy, Sr. and a host of cousins. Countless colleagues, students, friends, and family will miss her dearly.
Lynn's life will be joyfully celebrated on March 23, 2026 at 11:30AM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Homes, (Van Strien Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield Avenue, NE Grand Rapids, MI 49505, (616) 361-2613). The family will receive guests at 11:00AM
