Life Story / Obituary
Luella May Grooters, 90, passed peacefully into Jesus' arms Sunday, February 1, 2026. Luella was born in Grand Rapids to Harold Raymond and Mary Alice (Curtis) Logan on June 3, 1935. She graduated from Union High School and in September of 1958 married her high school sweetheart, John Henry Grooters. Beginning their marriage in Grand Rapids then settling in Hudsonville, John and Lue raised three children before eventually embarking on a warm and glorious retirement in South Carolina.
Lue was a stay-at-home mom during her children’s early years. Having an affinity for the elderly, however, Lue later came to serve others in nursing care facilities. She was blessed with a green thumb, planting and tending many types of flowers. Lue also enjoyed entertaining others, hosting many dinners over the years. A devout Christian, she sang in the choirs of several local churches before raising her voice to God’s glory in the Bible Belt during retirement. She and John returned to Grand Rapids in 2016.
Lue was preceded in death by husband John, sister Barbara Stevens, brothers-in-law John Stevens and Leroy Troxel; survived by children, Julie (Rob) Lough, John (Karen), and June (Bill) Weavers. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jamie (Grant) Heuvelman, Michelle (Nate) Hayes, Jenn (Nathan) Elwood, Haleigh (Rodney) Mullins, Erin Lough, Hayden Weavers, and great-grandchildren, Nikolas, Ryleigh, Alexandria, Hazel, and baby due in two weeks; sister Linda Troxel and several nieces and nephews. The family extends its sincere gratitude to the staffs at Edison Christian Health Center (Christian Rest Home) and Faith Hospice.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 11 AM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home – Van Strien Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield Avenue NE, Grand Rapids, where friends may visit with family from 10 AM until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Edison Christian Foundation. To read more about Luella's life, to share a memory or to sign her guestbook, visit www.heritagelifestory.com
