Life Story / Obituary
A family man through and through, Lloyd Ney Jr. leaves his loved ones with a rich legacy of being a strong role model and an exceptionally committed person to those he loved. Known for his strong work ethic and always putting others first, Lloyd would do anything to help others in need. There is no doubt that he will be deeply missed by his many special friends and family for generations to come.
The year 1944 was well known for June 6th as D-Day during WWII. The war postponed both the winter and summer Olympics that year and brought hardship for many around the world. Yet, there was also the music of Bing Crosby, the notable works of Tennessee Williams, as well as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet on the radio. Lloyd Sr. and Ethel Ney welcomed home their only son, Lloyd James Jr., on April 19th, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His birth brought much hope and happiness to the family home.
Growing up at 2250 Leonard on the northwest side of town, Lloyd lived a typical childhood of the times. He attended Oakleigh Elementary School, where he enjoyed playing on the football team. By the time he made it to high school, he participated on the chess team and fell in love with cars. Lloyd drove a fancy car during these developing years. After graduating with the Class of 1962 from Union High, he enrolled at Grand Rapids Junior College. He later transferred to Ferris State University. During these years, Lloyd met the love of his life, Janette. The two of them shared many commonalities and joined in marriage on August 22, 1970, at St. John Fisher in Rochester, Michigan. The newlyweds honeymooned in Ludington. They took the Badger to Milwaukee and drove back to Michigan. Settling on Myrtle Street, they started their family, which grew to include three wonderful children: Lloyd III, Eric, and Colleen.
As a dad, Lloyd was very involved. He enjoyed many years cheering on his kids from the sidelines and being their biggest fan. He was stern, yet loving, always wanting to provide his children with the best opportunities. His work in sales selling bleachers to area school gymnasiums gave his family a stable home. As a family, they traveled between both grandparents’ homes during the holiday seasons. Their close-knit family treasured many memories together. Lloyd wanted nothing more than to give his family the resources they needed for success.
When the kids were grown, they moved the family to their home on Remembrance Road, where they lived out their remaining years. When he and Janette were blessed with grandkids, Lloyd never missed any invitation to attend their special events, as well as watch the grandkids while their parents went back to work. His active involvement led him to be known as the preschool Parent of the Year! Lloyd enjoyed teaching them many new things and sharing stories with them. He and Janette were very active in their home church at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marne. Sharing their faith was important to them. Any amount of time their family was joined together, their hearts were content.
Lloyd never really slowed down even after retirement. He enjoyed joining a group of friends for trout fishing as much as he could over the years. He was always taking on projects or helping others in the community. Everywhere he went, people seemed to know him. Lloyd never knew a stranger and was a friend to all. Described as very friendly and outgoing, Lloyd loved connecting with people. He had a real gift for making others feel comfortable in his presence. Lloyd will surely be missed. His wisdom, along with his special charm, will always be treasured. A wonderful man to know and to love, he always wanted the best for his family. May the warm memories of their years together remain in their hearts forevermore.
Our loving husband, dad (Pops), and grandpa, Lloyd James Ney Jr., age 81, passed away in the comfort of his home in Walker, Michigan, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, with his family by his side. He was born in the Spring of 1944 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Lloyd Sr. and Ethel Ney. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Janet Ney, and brother-in-law, Mike Lucas. Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Janette Ney, and their children Lloyd James III “Jimmy” (Krista) Ney, Eric Ney, Colleen Marie (Kevin) Heyboer, and grandchildren, Lloyd IV “Jamie”, Jacob, and Jackson Ney and Lorelai (Little LN) and Evin Heyboer. Lloyd also leaves behind his very special sister-in-law, Marie Lucas. His stepbrothers, Richard (Becky) Profit and Bill Profit (Vicky), and many nieces and nephews, also survive. While Lloyd was a friend to all and everyone became an instant friend, he enjoyed a special friendship with his fishing buddies, Doug Arendsen and Jim Postma. Lloyd and Janette were members of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Marne. Mass of Christian burial will be held there at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Friends may meet with Lloyd’s family for visitation at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, Alt-Shawmut Chapel on Monday, June 2, 2025, from 3:00 PM - 7:30 PM, with the rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM and at church prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM. Lloyd will be laid to rest in Saint Mary's Cemetery in Marne, MI. Memorial contributions in Lloyd’s memory may be made to the Knights of Columbus, 1140 Muskegon Avenue NW, Grand Rapids, MI 40504.
