Leonard Gene Bergsma, age 79, after a long battle with cancer, went peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 17, 2024. Len was born October 11, 1944 in Grand Rapids, to the late Obbe and Frances (Naber) Bergsma. He was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Betty Bergsma. Len was a proud veteran of the National Guard, longtime westsider and owned a pallet business with his brother Edwin. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Donna (nee Ritsema); sons, Len (Gwen), Dan (Ina), Bob (Ingrid); grandchildren, Mason (Becca), Nina (Kurtis), Bryce, Nicholas; and great grandchildren, Katerina, Noah, Madelyn and Ezra. Also surviving are his sister, Joyce (Bob) Haveman; cousin, Jerry (Barb) Swanger; in-laws, Bob and Shirley Ritsema and Linda Owen; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11 AM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 4-7 PM and beginning at 10 AM Saturday. The family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by both Corewell Hospice and Edison Christian Health Center. Memorials may be made to Edison Christian Health Center, Mel Trotter Ministries or American Cancer Society.
