The Life Story of Kah’yla Josh’a Monea Harrison
February 8, 2000 – April 10, 2026
Kah’yla Josh’a Monea Harrison came into the world on February 8, 2000, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She didn’t wait long to make an impression. As a baby, she was named Olan Mills Baby of the Month. Her smile lit up that portrait studio, just like every other room she ever walked in.
She grew up tough and gifted. She graduated from Wyoming High School in Wyoming, Michigan. Following her schooling Kah’yla attended Union High School, while at Union, she was the only girl who played football. She also played soccer and basketball — if there was a team, she showed up ready to work. That work ethic defined her. She started her first job at 16 and never went without one after. It’s something everybody should look up to.
After her high school years, she was really proud to be selected and practice with a women’s football team, the Grand Rapids Tidal Waves. Getting that chance meant everything to her.
Kayla signed up for ROTC because she had a real passion for the Military. She believed in service, in discipline and being part of something bigger
She was an artist too. She loved art, loved music, and creating both was a passion to her. She designed clothes. She was a photographer who saw things other people missed. She put her own songs out on YouTube and Spotify — her voice, her words, out there for anyone to hear. She loved being alone in nature. That was where she could breathe and just be.
Kah’yla loved her family the most, she was an amazing aunt. TT didn’t miss the big moments. She was there at the hospital when two of her nieces were born, ready to love them from their first breath. Kah’yla felt things deeply. She picked her family, and she showed up for them every time.
She will be remembered for her smile, her beautiful soul, and a work ethic that didn’t quit. For the songs she left us. For the photos. For being the girl who played football, for practicing with the Tidal Waves, and the aunt who made it to the hospital. For finding peace in nature and loving hard. That was Kah’yla. She was here. She did the work. She mattered.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kah’yla Josh’a Monea Harrison, who departed from us on April 10, 2026, at the tender age of 26, in Wyoming, Michigan. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on February 8, 2000, Kah’yla graced the world with a luminous spirit and an unforgettable smile that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved her.
Kah’yla lived a life rich in purpose and compassion. Her radiant presence illuminated every room she entered, a testament to her beautiful soul and kindness. She possessed an exceptional work ethic and a remarkable capacity to feel things deeply, extending that same empathy and support to everyone around her. Her ability to connect with people on a genuine level was one of her most cherished gifts.
She is survived by her mother, Wendy Gryzen; her father, Aaron (Vicky Morrison) Harrison; her sister Aleshia Al-Nass, and her partner Benjamin Frey; brothers, Aaron Harrison II and Kah’lil Harrison. Her life partner for 10 years Andrea Bermudez.
A proud and adoring aunt, Kah’yla's memory will live on through her nieces and nephews, Taylor, Kendyl , Ava Uliyana ,Loyalty, Kah’Mari and Logic.
Grandmother Jeraldine Harrison, her aunts Monica Harrison and Rochelle Harrison, her uncles Timothy Harrison, Norman (Charito) Harrison, Ammon Harrison, her half sister Tierra Foster.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, Oscar and Tressia Bates; her stepfather, Richard Gryzen; her siblings, Joshua Al-Nass, Dennis Strong, step brother Arrion Foster, her aunt Belinda Harrison, and cousin Brandon Bates.
The family kindly requests that you honor Kah’yla’s compassionate spirit by extending kindness to someone in need, considering a donation to a mental health charity, and holding your loved ones close, reflecting the deep connections she so valued. Kah'yla's light may have dimmed too soon, but her warmth and love will continue to shine brightly in our hearts forever.
A service to honor and remember Kah’yla will be help on Saturday April 25, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, Van Strien Creston Chapel 1833 Plainfield Ave NE, Grand Rapids MI 49505.
