June Maxine Upton Nordstrom passed away peacefully on January 18, 2006. June was the beloved mother and mother-in-law of Judith (Nordstrom) and Robert Baiers and Mary (Nordstrom) and Thomas VanKuiken. She was the loving grandmother of Erik Robert and Rebecca Baiers, Adam Nordstrom and Kathleen Baiers, Aaron Nordstrom Baiers, and Thomas Fredrik VanKuiken. June was the treasured great-grandmother of William Robert Baiers. She was also the dear and devoted friend of Joseph Murphy, whose companionship and steadfastness she highly valued. June is survived by her brother, James "Terry" Upton and sisters-inlaw, Beverly Upton and Katie Upton of Rochester, MI. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Walter "Bernie" Fauser of Dallas, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who she always enjoyed seeing. June was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ruth Cole Upton; her son, Fredrik "Rik" Cole Nordstrom; husband, Gustav Fredrik "Fred" Nordstrom; brother, Jack Upton, and sister, Joan "Jokie" Upton Fauser. June was born on June 5, 1920 in Pontiac, MI. She grew up in Rochester, MI, where her father owned the Dillman and Upton Lumber Yard which the family continues to operate. June graduated from Olivet College and was an active member of the Soronian Literary Guild. After moving to Washington, D.C. June met and later married Fred Nordstrom, to whom she was married for 46 years. June and Fred raised their three children in Grand Rapids, MI, where Fred owned "Nordstrom's Shoes" for many years. Before joining Fountain Street Church in the 1950's, June was an active member of the Pilgrim Guild of East Congregational Church. June was a beautiful and artistic woman, blessed with many interests and talents. She loved playing the piano, dancing, painting, decorating, entertaining, gourmet cooking, bridge playing, and reading. June especially valued her relationships with friends and family. She will be deeply missed by all of those who loved and treasured her. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude for every kind word, deed, touch, and thought that were extended to June in these past few months. According to June's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate June's life on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fountain Street Church Chapel (24 Fountain St. NE.). Preceding the service, the family will welcome friends in the Keeler Lounge at 1:00 p.m. Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at Watermark Country Club (5500 Cascade Road SE). In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Visiting Nurses Hospice or Fountain Street Church, if they wish.
