Judy Schaub was a wonderful person to know and to love. She lived her life with a positive outlook that supported her during life’s greatest challenges. She was well loved by her family. There is no doubt that her endearing personality and her compassion for others will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her story begins on July 13, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Michigan while the nation was still recovering from tough economic times. Judith Lorraine was born to Howard and Irene (Mosher) Hascher bringing great joy and hope into their lives. Judy was the oldest of five children. She was later joined by her siblings; Bill, Diane, Tom, and Steve. They were always proud to have raised such a respectful and well-mannered daughter. Her father was a tradesman working in construction and her mother was a homemaker. She was close to her siblings, especially Diane.

Growing up the family lived on Straight Avenue on the northwest side of town. Judy’s Grandmother lived across the street and Judy fondly remembered visiting her house. Shy during her childhood years, her mother sent her to “Charm School” to gain confidence. Judy eventually gained the skills needed to land her a modeling job with JC Penny’s department store. She was also involved with the Camp Fire Girls program during her younger years. Studious and ambitious, she enjoyed history and grammar/reading. She was known to help other students with their homework. Her school journey started at St. James Catholic before she transferred to West Catholic Middle School and eventually graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1955. Judy blossomed during her time at Davenport University where she studied secretarial skills.

Not to be forgotten was the meeting of Louis Schaub, the man who would change the course of her life forever. They got off to a bit of a rocky start when Louis didn’t show up on their first date due to car trouble. Luckily, they worked it out the following morning so they could enjoy breakfast out at the Knife and Fork in the Pantlind Hotel! After dating for nearly a year, the happy couple joined in marriage on May 9, 1959. They were made for one another. As luck would have it, one of the houses that Judy walked by countless times as a young girl came up just in time for the newlyweds to make an offer! Judy was thrilled to live in a home that was a part of her childhood dreams. She and Louis raised seven wonderful children; Tom, Lisa, Jim, Eileen, David, Susan, and Dan.

As a mother, Judy cherished her years as a homemaker. She enjoyed keeping up with her children’s activities. She spent her days volunteering in the school library and was active in her church. Her children remember her Christmas decorations and making them feel loved with her attention to every detail. As a family, they enjoyed several vacations to Northern Michigan to visit relatives and enjoy the outdoors. Judy was very involved in her children’s lives even after they had grown and moved away from home.

Judy was a woman of many special interests. She was an avid reader throughout her life. Some of her favorites were Erma Bombeck, historical fiction, and American Southern novels such as Gone with the Wind. She enjoyed variety shows on TV, especially the Andy Williams Show and Carol Burnett. A person with a known sweet tooth, it was likely to find a candy dish in every corner of her home! She was never fond of cooking, but enjoyed a good steak or Prime Rib whenever they ate out! Judy enjoyed visiting the local Grand Rapids Zoo and had a membership there for many years. She also played Bingo at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church. In retirement, she enjoyed her travels to visit her kids across the U.S. in California, Washington D.C., Williamsburg, Virginia, and Shipshewana in Indiana. Any amount of time she was with her family, her heart was content.

She and Louis had a special love for one another and enjoyed many happy years together before he passed away. Judy leaned on her family for support and cherished each addition to the family. She treated everyone with kindness and generosity, a legacy she leaves behind to her abundant family. Judy wanted nothing more than the very best for her many special friends and loved ones. May they always look back fondly on her rich collection of memories and may their lives reflect the joy and laughter she shared with so many over the years.

Judith [Hascher] Schaub, “Judy” age 87, of Grand Rapids, passed away in the comfort of her home and in the company of her daughter Lisa on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. Judy was born in Grand Rapids, MI in the summer of 1937 to the late Howard and Irene [Mosher] Hascher.
