Hartel, John Warrington

January 27, 1955 – June 28, 2021

John passed away peacefully in Grand Rapids, Michigan with family at his bedside after a short battle with Melanoma.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Warrington Hartel and his granddaughter, Charlie Kelly Verhulst.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathleen Ann (nee Freiman), his mother Anna Jane Hartel, his brother, Peter Roland Hartel (Martha Shaifer) and his children, Colin Warrington Hartel, Kaitlyn Kelly Hartel (Jordan Verhulst) and Alexander Ethan Hartel. He will be dearly missed by his many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

John was born in Pontiac Michigan and resided in New Jersey, Virginia, Plymouth, Michigan and Boulder, Colorado before establishing a home in Grand Rapids Michigan to raise his family. He was an Eagle Scout and earned a black belt in Tai Kwan Do. He enjoyed traveling and visited England. He always looked forward to the annual vacation, spending time with family at their cottage in Maine.

John graduated with a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and an MBA from Grand Valley State and retired from Result Global, Ltd. His other interests included Music, Arts, Gardening, rock climbing, hiking, and creating nature sculptures. John was an avid collector of Comic books, and items related to Sci-Fi and he loved searching for arrowheads, rocks and seashells on the beaches of Maine.

He was also involved in Faith Fire Band at Faith United Methodist Church, and was active in many aspects of Church mentorship.
