Joan T. Hitchings, aged 67, of Nunica, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born October 21, 1939, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, to Ferdinand and Emma (Kunik) Potocny, and she married Joseph L. Hitchings on October 16, 1982, in Lebanon, PA. Joan moved to the Tri-Cities area 21 years ago and was employed by The Store in Grand Haven. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Coopersville, as well as a member of the Tuesday Art Club in Grand Rapids. She enjoyed painting, gardening, and above all, spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her loving husband, Joe; a daughter, Susan Schrider of Ellicott City, Maryland; a step-daughter, Jennifer (Joe) Lawlor of Pittsburgh, PA; three sons, Frank Loehle of New Holland, PA, Michael Loehle of Grandville, and William (Paula) Loehle of Dutton; a step-son, Joe L. Hitchings of Mechanicsberg, PA; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Miller of Lebanon, PA, and Agnes (Paul) Leigh of Wisconsin; and two brothers, Carl Potocny and John (Josie) Potocny, both of Lebanon, PA. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; a brother, Ferdinand; and late husband, Frank Loehle. The Funeral Mass for Joan will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2007, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Coopersville with Rev. Anthony Pelak as celebrant. Friends may meet the family 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, February 9, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake with a Scripture Service at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
