Life Story / Obituary
With what should have been so many years left in which to write his life’s song, Jeffrey O’ Hearn was taken from his loved ones much too soon.
The 1960s were an eventful time in American history. We mourned the death of President Kennedy while the Vietnam War divided us and the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union was in full swing. It was within this time that a young couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was delighted with the birth of their baby boy on September 26, 1969. Jeffrey Peter, or Jeff as he was usually known, was one of three boys born to his parents, Terry and Dorothy (Berg) O'Hearn, and was raised in the family home on the West side alongside his brothers, Tim and Ryan.
In many ways Jeff experienced a typical upbringing. He was a good kid who always wanted to do the right thing as being obedient and proper were a way of life for Jeff. He had a great sense of humor, and it was easy to know when he was going to say something because Jeff would raise an eyebrow. He loved being outdoors as a boy whether he was playing with his brothers, playing baseball, riding his bike, or building forts in the woods in addition to sledding during the winter. As he got older Jeff got into playing Dungeons and Dragons and reading books. He was always content to be part of the crowd rather than to be in the spotlight. Jeff attended St. James and then went on to graduate from West Catholic. From there he attended Grand Rapids Community College for a time in addition to Central Michigan University a bit later, and he earned his bachelor’s degree from Davenport College.
Jeff’s earliest days in the work force were when he was still in school. He worked at McDonald’s, Parkside Shoprite, Best Buy, and a nearby party store. In 1998 he began working for Frito Lay with his own sales and delivery route. Jeff’s job wasn’t perfect, but he always worked his hardest and was looking for ways to make his job smoother.
Always one to be active, Jeff had numerous interests. For a time he took yoga classes in addition to dancing and gymnastic lessons, and he was also a black belt in karate. Jeff was never really one to drink or smoke, which often made him the designated driver. He was known for his big appetite, especially if pie was being served. If he didn’t know something, Jeff would research it so he could form an opinion that he was always able to defend. He loved being with his brothers, and together they went places like Cedar Point or camping around Michigan. Jeff also enjoyed being an uncle. Spending time with Roxanne was another favorite activity including their memorable trip to Hawaii.
Someone who was generous, thoughtful, and passionate about the things he believed in, Jeffrey O’Hearn was blessing in the lives of his family and friends.
Jeffrey Peter O'Hearn, age 43 of Grand Rapids, passed away July 24, 2013. Jeff is survived by his parents, Terry and Dorothy O'Hearn; his brothers and sister-in-law Tim (Carolyn) and Ryan; nephews Kyle and Lucas; his special friend, Roxanne Harper, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 27 at 11 AM at St. James Catholic Church where friends may visit with his family from 10 AM until the time of the service. For those who wish, memorial contributions to a charity of your choice are appreciated. To read more about Jeff's life, to share a memory or to sign the guestbook, please visit www.lifestorynet.com
