Life Story / Obituary
With a journey that spanned over seven decades of friendship, family, and faith, Jean Poston always kept her gaze on what mattered most. Truly a woman who made the world around her a better place, she was a dedicated servant in her faith and her community, and her positive attitude and unyielding resilience has left a lasting impact on those she loved. Already so dearly missed, Jean will be forever cherished and remembered.
The mid-1950s were some exciting years to be alive in the United States of America. The country was flourishing following the end of the Korean Conflict overseas. Back in the U.S., popular TV shows such as “I Love Lucy” burst onto the scene, bringing the world of entertainment right into the home. It was during this influential time that Wilbur and Frieda (Yerke) Breault of Detroit, Michigan, were awaiting the arrival of their third child. It was on February 21 of 1954 that their daughter, Jean Gertrude, made her entrance into the world. Jean joined her two older brothers, Errol and Steve, in the Breault family.
Jean’s childhood unfolded in her hometown of Detroit. She was a typical girl of her generation in many ways, growing up surrounded by family and friends. Jean attended local schools, and she built the firm foundation of her faith while attending Berean Baptist Church with her family. Jean graduated from Detroit Cooley High School, then spent some time working before going off to Baptist Bible College in Pennsylvania, eager to see what the future held in store.
It was while attending Baptist Bible College that Jean met the young man who would forever hold the key to her heart. His name was John Poston, and the two fell in love and were united in marriage. John would soon step into his service as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force, bringing the couple to serve as an active duty Chaplain in Arkansas before settling down in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to begin their lives together.
Before long, Jean and John welcomed their two beloved children, Abraham and Grace, into their hearts and home. She thrived in her role as a mother, and caring for her family was her first priority. Jean and John raised their family in Grand Rapids. Later in life, Jean was thrilled to become a grandmother. She was an aunt to several nieces and nephews as well. Jean considered herself blessed beyond measure to watch her family grow to include so many loved ones.
When she wasn’t tending to her own family and home, Jean found many ways to lend a helping hand in her community and her church. She had a deep, genuine love for all children and was such a nurturing figure in her various childcare roles over the years. She went on two memorable mission trips to Greece, and it brought her so much joy to serve around the world. Jean also built many meaningful friendships throughout her life. She looked forward to weekly scheduled phone calls, outings and her gatherings and with friends at Mr. Burger. Family and friends were Jean’s greatest treasures.
As we gather to reflect on the life of Jean Poston, it is easy to celebrate a woman so devoted to caring for others. Her unwavering strength was a testimony to the faith that served her well, and she exemplified what it meant to follow after the Lord she loved so much. Although she will be forever missed, Jean leaves behind a priceless legacy of selflessness and compassion that her loved ones will be proud to carry on in her footsteps.
Jean G Poston, age 71 of Grand Rapids, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 30, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chaplain Colonel John, in 2013. Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Abraham and Fikirte; daughter Grace; grandchildren Abraham, Mailey, John and Joseph and honorary grandson, Dax Bunting; brothers Errol Breault and Steve (Margaret) Breault; as well as nieces and nephews.
The service to remember and celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Friday, November 7 at 11 AM at Calvary Church, 707 East Beltline NE. Friends may visit with her family beginning at 10 AM. Interment to follow in Fort Custer National Cemetery.
