As family and friends will certainly attest, George Bowers truly lived his life to the very fullest, making the most of every blessing he was given. A notorious servant in his community, he was always willing to go above and beyond to help others in whatever ways he could. There was nothing that made George happier than spending time with his loved ones, and there was never a moment with his friends and family that he took for granted. His insatiable zest for life was contagious to all who were lucky enough to know him. Deeply cherished, George will be forever missed.

The mid 1950s are among some of the most influential years in the history of the United States. Following the end of the Korean Conflict overseas, the historical civil rights movement was in full swing. Popular TV shows such as “I Love Lucy” and “Father Knows Best,” burst onto the scene, bringing laughter into every home. It was during this exciting time that Russell and Dorothy (Jones) Bowers were thrilled to announce the arrival of their third child. Born on May 21 of 1955, George joined his two older brothers, Jim and Bill, in the Bowers family. He would soon become a big brother to his two younger siblings, Karen and Todd, making George the middle child.

Growing up, George was a typical boy of his generation. He was raised in the family home on the West side of Grand Rapids, Michigan. George’s father, Russell, was a truck mechanic, and his mother, Dorothy, tended to the house and children as a homemaker. From a young age, George was a bundle of energy and loved playing kickball, basketball, and swimming. He loved his mother’s french fries. Holidays were always spent with family, hosting amazing dinners and opening plenty of presents. The Bowers also enjoyed several vacations visiting relatives out in the country. Throughout his school years, George attended local schools, including Harrison Park Elementary School and Union High School. He graduated in 1975, eager to see what the future held in store.

All who knew George will certainly agree that he considered his friends and family to be his greatest treasure. He was fortunate to meet the love of his life, Pamela Thornburg, outside a social event. Pam’s ride home had to leave, so George was more than happy to step in. At the time, Pam was working in the office of Keeler Brass. There was an instant spark between George and Pam. Over the next two years of dating, they fell head over heels in love, and the rest was history. George married Pam in her mother’s backyard in Walker, Michigan, eager to spend the rest of his days with the woman he loved. The newlyweds enjoyed a honeymoon to Virginia Beach, then settled down in Grand Rapids.

George was a gentle and loving parent when it came to raising his three beloved daughters, Bonnie, Heather, and Samantha. He thrived in his role as a father, and his girls were his pride and joy. George held a variety of jobs over the years to provide for his family, mainly working in supervisory roles in manufacturing plants. No matter how demanding the work could be, his family was always his first priority. The Bowers enjoyed many memorable vacations to amusement parks and zoos, creating priceless memories. Later in life, George was overjoyed to become a grandfather to Justin, Zack, Emiliano, and Apollo. He doted on his grandkids, and he considered himself greatly blessed to watch his family grow to include so many loved ones.

George was the kind of man who could appreciate a good nap, but he also enjoyed filling his free time with movies and good music. Some of his favorite bands included Earth, Wind, and Fire, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, and he had a great singing voice of his own. George took great pride in keeping his front lawn well maintained. He liked going out for a good steak, and he was known for his delicious pot roast. An avid reader, George enjoyed historical and military books. He loved his Camaro and Montecarlo in his younger years, and more recently, he took an interest in antique clocks. Always willing to step in to lend a helping hand, George was known as the neighborhood handyman, and he was everyone’s favorite “fix it” guy. He often volunteered with the Democratic party. No one was a stranger to George for long, and he could carry on a conversation with anyone and everyone.

As we gather to reflect on the life of George Bowers, it is easy to celebrate a man so dedicated to caring for all those around him. He was a shining example of kindness and compassion, and he was a family man through and through. Although he is already so greatly missed, George leaves behind a priceless legacy that his loved ones will be proud to carry on in his footsteps.
