Frederick James Boylen, aged 67, of Grand Rapids, passed away April 22, 2006. Surviving are his three sons, Frederick J. Boylen Jr. of South Bend, IN, Robert C. (Patrice) Boylen of East Grand Rapids, James F. (Christine) Boylen of E. Lansing; six grandchildren, Chad, Sarah, Madeline, Daniel, Christopher, and Ashlen; four brothers, Michael (Nancy) Boylen of Ft. Wayne, IN, Terrance Boylen, William (Linda) Boylen and Thomas (Renee) Boylen all of Grand Rapids; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Alice Boylen. Fred was both the city and state heavyweight Golden Gloves boxing champion in 1954, graduated Catholic Central High School Class of 1957, was the only football player from Grand Rapids to ever make the All State First Team two years in a row, he graduated Michigan State University Class of 1961, was captain of the 1961 MSU football team, and was in the insurance business for 30 years. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 25 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Rev. Turk Rooney, Presider. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Down Syndrome Achievement Fund, c/o Grand Rapids Community Foundation or Catholic Central High School. The family will receive friends Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:45 p.m. at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, 4291 Cascade Rd.
