Life Story / Obituary
Dorothy A. Ferguson, of Grand Rapids Michigan, passed away on April 26, 2025 at Medi Lodge of Grand Rapids. Dorothy was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI, to the late Chester and Sena Dykstra, who both precede her in death.
Dorothy started her education at South West Christian School and later graduated from Wyoming Public School. After graduating, she began working as a clerk at Dreswel Dry Cleaner. A young man named James Ferguson would come in to get his clothing laundered there and he would spend time talking with Dorothy. Over time, this friendship grew and they were married on April 25, 1970, in Grand Rapids.
Dorothy and James began their married life in Dorothy’s apartment in Burton Heights; after some time they would move to a home on the north end of Grand Rapids and eventually found themselves in Sparta, Michigan.
Dorothy worked for years at the dry cleaner’s, however, after struggling with some health concerns, she needed to retire. After retiring, she and James spent time traveling together and enjoying the time they had. They would travel to Florida and Nashville, and would frequently visit Frankenmuth, Michigan to enjoy a chicken dinner.
Dorothy and James were never able to have children due to medical complications, however, she loved taking care of children and sharing her love wherever she went.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 55 years, James Ferguson; her sister, Mary (Bob) Huizen and her brother, Mitch (Betsy) Dykstra, as well as her sisters-in-law, Judy Dykstra and Candyce Dykstra. Dorothy also leaves behind her brothers-in-law, John Hoekstra, Roger Ferguson and Jerry Ferguson, and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her sister, Sally, brothers, George and Jack, and sister-in-law, Joyce Dykstra.
Dorothy died at MediLodge Grand Rapids, after an extended, difficult sickness. Dorothy’s family would like to take the staff at MediLodge for their loving supportive care for her.
A service to remember Dorothy will be held at Heritage Life Story Funeral Homes Van Strien-Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield NE Grand Rapids, 49504 on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 1:00 PM. Dorothy’s family will visit with friends for an hour prior to this service at the funeral home.
