With a journey that spanned seven decades of wonderful memories filled with family, friendship, and service to all those around him, Darrell Knight kept his gaze fixed on what mattered most through it all. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone, and no one remained a stranger for long. Of all the things Darrell loved, he cherished his family and friends above all else. His determination was unwavering through all the ups and downs of life, and his nickname, “Mr. Wonderful,” truly described his strong values and character. Already so deeply missed, Darrell will be forever loved and remembered by those who knew him best.

The mid 1950s are among some of the most influential years in the history of the United States. The nation was flourishing following the end of the Korean Conflict overseas. Back home, the civil rights movement was in full swing, and popular TV shows such as “I Love Lucy” and “Father Knows Best,” burst onto the scene, changing the world of entertainment forever. During such an exciting time, there was no one who looked forward to the future more than Thomas and Miriam Knight, a young couple living in Adrian, Michigan. It was on October 29 of 1955 that they welcomed their third son, Darrell Alfred, into the world.

Growing up, Darrell enjoyed a typical childhood of his generation. He was raised in the family home in the country alongside his five siblings, Denny, Dallas, Doug, Darlene, and Duane. The Knight boys loved riding around on dirt bikes, and they were also known to get in their fair share of mischief. Whenever he got in trouble, Darrell’s mother would punish him with a willow branch. He and his brothers all took care of a prized Mustang Fastback Z71. Darrell attended local schools and juggled his education with a job at Service Master, cleaning offices and bathrooms for companies.

Darrell graduated from Adrian High School, then went on to attend community college for a few weeks before deciding that further education wasn’t for him. Instead, he began working on the assembly line at the General Motors plant in Adrian. In 1985, Darrell moved to West Michigan, settling down in Coopersville while working at the General Motors plant on Alpine. When that plant closed, he moved to work at another plant.

It was through his career that Darrell met Rebecca Thornton, the young woman who would forever hold the key to his heart. They worked together as friends for a time, but soon found their relationship blossoming into something truly special. The couple began dating and quickly became inseparable. With a desire to spend the rest of their lives together, Darrell and Becky were married on October 6, 1990. The newlyweds then lived in their first home in Wyoming, Michigan, for a time before moving to their longtime home in Walker.

Before long, Darrell and Becky brought their son, Ricky, into their hearts and home. Darrell thrived in his role as a father, and he was very involved in Ricky’s life, never missing an event or special occasion. Darrell was a reluctant disciplinarian, but he was an excellent role model and instilled in Ricky the importance of hard work and compassion. Over the years, the Knight family took many memorable trips to visit family on the East side of Michigan and several vacations down to the Gulf Coast in Florida as well. Around home, they enjoyed family campfires and Becky’s amazing cooking.

Never one to sit still for long, Darrell pursued many hobbies to keep busy in his free time. He stayed super active by playing softball and tennis, riding his bike on White Pine Trail, and bowling with Becky. Darrell was also a longtime member at West Side Fitness Gym and would lift weights several times a week. He put those muscles to good use splitting wood for their family campfires. Throughout his entire life, Darrell enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors. He loved going to the beach and having a sun tan. Though he didn’t play music himself, Darrell liked listening to country music, and he looked forward to his Friday night jam sessions at his buddy Bert’s house. His special Long Island iced tea recipe was his favorite. Darrell was a people person to his core, and he maintained many friendships throughout much of his life. His genuine heart for people drew others to him, and he was a social butterfly with a love for practical jokes.

Darrell’s family was his greatest treasure, and everything he did was for his loved ones. He built a successful career for himself with General Motors until his retirement at the age of 53, providing well for his family. Darrell and Becky enjoyed spending their time in Florida, living it up on the beach and in the sun. The Sea Towers Resort and Bamboo Beach Bar in Florida were among some of their favorite places to be. In 2006, the Knights faced a challenge with Becky’s breast cancer diagnosis. However, both Darrell and Ricky considered it their honor to become her caregivers throughout her battle. They traveled to Ann Arbor for treatment and supported Becky through her fight in every way they could. Darrell remained Becky’s steadfast caregiver until she passed away in October of 2020.

As family and friends gather to reflect on the life and legacy of Darrell Knight, it is easy to celebrate a man so devoted to caring for those around him. He was a constant source of strength, even in the most difficult of times, and he faced every obstacle that came his way with unyielding perseverance. A dedicated husband, father, and friend, Darrell was loved by so many. His insatiable zest for life could be felt by all those around him. Though he will be dearly missed, Darrell leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that his loved ones will forever hold near and dear to their hearts.

Darrell Alfred Knight, age 70 of Grand Rapids and formerly of Adrian, MI passed away November 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his wife Becky Knight; his brother Duane Knight and sister-in-law Linda. Darrell is survived by his son, Ricky Knight; his brothers and sisters in law Denny (Peggy) Knight, Dallas (Robin) Knight, Doug Knight, and sister and brother in law Darlene (Don) Knight; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A service to remember and celebrate Darrell’s life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 11 AM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home – Van Strien Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield NE, Grand Rapids MI, 49505.
