Life Story / Obituary
Darlene N. Mulder was born near Ireton, IA, on Sept 4, 1937, to Ted and Jo (Sinkey) Riepma. Upon graduating from the Ireton Christian School and Western Christian High, she attended Calvin College. She married Alfred E. (Al) Mulder on Aug 16, 1957, and taught in Moline Christian School while he was in seminary. Together they served congregations in Kansas, Utah, and New Mexico; she also worked for Rehoboth Christian Hospital. After they moved to Grand Rapids in 1984, she worked for Wolverine Gas and Oil until she went on disability in 1996. Darlene was conscientious about all she did, had a special gift for relating cross-culturally, and fiercely loved her multicultural family. On August 7, 2017, she was transported into the life-giving presence of our loving Savior God. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, her youngest daughter Eva Rose Nickles, and son-in-law Gary Huber. She is survived by her husband, Rev. Al Mulder of Grand Rapids; daughters Rev. Bonny (and Jahan) Mulder-Behnia of Bellflower, CA, Diane (and Joe) Garcia of Gallup, NM, and Carla Huber (and friend Claudio Martin) of Albuquerque, NM; ten grandchildren—Joni Wynia, Daryl Wynia, Angela Delgado, Al Garcia, Senovio Garcia, Bronson Huber, Crystal Davis, Brandon Huber, Cassi Nickles, Curtis Nickles—and their families, including 16 great grandchildren and counting; sisters Beverly (and Bob) Attema and Marge (and Earl) Cuperus; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Harold and Marlyce Mulder, Ivan and Ruth Mulder, Stan and Elaine Altena, Phyllis and Rev. Curtis Roelofs, Marv and Dee Mulder, Alma and Ed Post, Leon and Shirley Mulder, and Donna Mulder; honorary daughter Nasha (and Dan) Huitema of Grandville, and special friend Mary Cancler of Grand Rapids. A celebration of Darlene’s life is planned for Saturday, Sept 2, 1:00pm, at Madison Square Church in Grand Rapids. The family will be available for visitation one hour prior to the service, and for fellowship with refreshments after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Resonate Global Mission (formerly Christian Reformed Home Missions and World Missions).
