Carrol Somers

Carrol Lee Somers, aged 91, of East Bay Twp., passed away April 14, 2006 at Munson Hospice House. Carrol was born November 5, 1914, in Fremont, the son of Benjamin and Susie (Williams) Somers. Carrol married Marian Somers, his wife of 61 years, until her passing in 1997. Carrol then married the former Laura Barz Bernhart in 1999. Carrol enjoyed representing Ohio National Life Insurance Company working in sales from 1960 until the early 90's. He was recognized in his field and was honored to serve as past President of the National Life Underwriters Association. But, Carrol's service did not end there he was also past President and Ambassador for the National Cherry Festival. Carrol also helped many by being instrumental in helping to get Medical Alert started in Michigan. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Masons, and Shriners as well as the Presbyterian church since August of 1957. Carrol could often be found playing golf, a hand of duplex bridge or possibly enjoying a manhattan. Carrol took pleasure in helping others plan for their families futures, but was most proud of his children and family. Carrol was a passionate MSU fan and member of the Alumni Club. He loved attending Spartan football games as a season ticket holder and also cheering on the TC Trojan football and basketball teams. Carrol will be deeply missed by all that knew him. Carrol is survived by his wife, Laura; his sons, Ken (Lynn) Somers of Grandville, Steve (Pat) Somers of Traverse City; daughter-in-law Toni Somers of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Ben, Michael and Tiffany; and many other loving family members and friends. Carrol was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian, in 1997; and son, Paul B. Somers in 2003. Visitation for family and friends will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2006 at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday April 18, 2006 at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City, with Reverend Dr. Homer Nye presiding. Visitation will also take place an hour prior to the service on Tuesday also at the church. Memorial contributions be directed to the Presbyterian Church or Munson Hospice House.
