Life Story / Obituary
As his family and friends can certainly agree, Cameron DeVries truly understood the secret to a life well lived. He was a constant source of strength, even in the most difficult of times, and he embodied a spirit of determination and kindness. Nothing brought Cam greater joy than spending time with his loved ones, even in the simplest of moments. His overflowing heart allowed him to touch the lives of countless others in ways both great and small. Dearly loved, Cam will be forever missed by those who knew him best.
The 2000s were an influential decade in the United States. Cutting edge technology was constantly improving everyday life, social media grew increasingly popular, and musical artists life Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani challenged the status quo. It was during this exciting time of change that Andrea DeVries and Michael Majewski were excited to announce the birth of the baby boy they named Cameron Ryan John DeVries on April 24, 2007. Cam was welcomed into the world by 15 of his family members who could not wait to meet him. As the first grandchild, he was beloved by many from the very first moment of his life.
Growing up, Cam was a typical young man of his generation in many ways. Much of his childhood was spent living with his mother off of 5 Mile, NE, in Northview. Cam was a bright child from the very beginning. He learned to talk at a young age, and he loved everything having to do with ninjas, even dressing up as a ninja for Halloween six years in a row. Cam enjoyed playing with Legos and erector sets, and he developed a true passion for engineering. He loved spending weekends at the family cabin in Irons, Michigan. Cam liked being in nature, and he enjoyed riding in the golf carts and dirt bikes, and he learned to shoot a shotgun, shoot a bow, and climb trees. His dog, Bella, was his longtime companion. Throughout his childhood Cam attended local schools. He started at Greenridge Elementary before attending North Oakview Elementary and Highlands Middle School. Later on, Cam went to Northview High School.
All who knew Cameron can surely attest that he treasured his family above all else. His mother was very important to him, and he saw her as his personal hero. They would go for dates, kayaking at Millennium Park. Cam’s grandparents were very involved in his life as well, and they doted on him whenever they could. Cam always loved spending time with his grandparents whether it was going to weekend breakfasts, shopping for football jerseys, or taking trips to Heperia up North where he would fish, cut wood, and enjoy his grandmother’s “freezer jam.”
Around the age of four, Cam met Adriana Angeles. Even then, he knew that she was the girl for him, though through the years it would go unmentioned. Cam adored Adri and enjoyed spending time with her. More recently, the two began dating, and Cam looked forward to their bright future together.
When Cam was about nine years old, his family grew to include Erick Dominguez and his children, who became Cam’s siblings and closest friends. In time, Erick simply became “Dad”. They shared their sneaker addiction, enjoyed playing basketball at Aberdeen Park, and spent time in the kitchen together. Cam and Erick were partners in crime, cracking jokes and growing very close. Cam also loved having brothers, at least most of the time, and he was fiercely protective of his younger sister. Though the siblings sometimes fought, they were always there for each other when it mattered most. Cameron always considered himself blessed to be surrounded by so many loved ones.
Cameron was well known for his entrepreneurial mind. He enjoyed finding creative ways to earn his own money. In younger years, Cam sold fidget spinners at school. More recently he coded and created data panels while planning what he could make to sell on Ebay. Later on, he worked at various restaurants, including Real Thai, Burger King, Zoup, and Wing Kings.
Never one to sit still for long, Cam pursued many hobbies to stay busy in his free time. He loved being in the great outdoors from a young age, and he stayed active by playing football, often as a center. Cam also enjoyed drawing and anime. He had a passion for art and fashion design and took several classes at school, even making his own clothes to wear. Among many, Cam was known for his shoe collection and fancy belts. He loved baking, and Mediterranean food was his favorite. Cam enjoyed traveling at every opportunity. He took spring break trips to the Gulf Coast as well as memorable trips to Atlanta, Colorado, and Indiana. Cam even hoped to visit Tokyo for his graduation. After learning to drive, he loved cruising around in his black Impala, getting a taste of freedom. He liked shopping at Sam’s Club, and he loved the Fast and Furious movies.
When reflecting on the life of Cameron DeVries, it is easy to see both his unwavering strength and his unconditional love for his family. He was adventurous and compassionate, and he always had an encouraging word to say. Cam was well known for his sense of humor, his comedic timing, and his infectious smile. He was always willing to pour his heart and soul into those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, Cam leaves behind a priceless legacy that his loved ones will be proud to carry on in his footsteps.
