Life Story / Obituary
Ann Lemon was a woman who knew what was important in life - her family and friends. She was a loving, devoted wife; a dutiful daughter, and a lifelong friend to her sister and brothers. Ann lived a life that saw many changes in the world, but through them all she remained a woman with a strong sense of family and community.
As the United States was celebrating a time of temporary peace and prosperity between the two world wars, Benjamin F. and Dorcas Green of Lowell, Michigan, were celebrating the birth of their daughter, Ann. Baby Ann was welcomed in the Green family which would eventually extend to include four children; two girls, Edna and Ann; and two boys, Robert and Richard.
Since this was during the time of The Great Depression in our nation's history, their father was very fortunate to be employed in a furniture factory in Lowell. Like most children born in this era, they were lucky to have the necessities of life, but the frills and frivolities were few and far between. The children attended elementary school in the Lowell area, but when their father became unemployed and other work was not immediately available, the family was uprooted and moved to Grand Rapids. Ann completed her high school education with graduation from Union High School.
In the years following her graduation, Ann met the man who would become her husband, Isaac Lemon. Isaac was the postal superintendent in Grand Rapids and the man who would take Ann Green as his wife. Isaac was a veteran of World War II and both he and Ann became involved in the VFW. The Lemon's had a long life together - 48 wonderful years. After Isaac's death, Ann remained active with the Creston Post 3023 VFW Auxiliary.
Ann had a notorious sense of humor. She would often raise a chuckle from the folks in her community when she would take a drive in her car. Her license plate read, "A Lemon", leaving folks to think she was referring to her car, rather than the driver.
Being a conscientious citizen in her community, Ann was the lone petitioner of a "No Hunting" ordinance within the city limits of Grand Rapids. It was enacted into law in the 1970's.
Some years later, Ann met Floyd Umlor and the couple became engaged, making plans for their future together. However, before their dreams could be realized, Floyd died in 2005.
Ann's life came to an end when she was struck down by the complications of a stroke. Ann will be lovingly remembered for her generous spirit, her strength of character and her unconditional love for her family. She will be deeply missed.Ann Lemon died on April 29, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Joseph Lemon Jr., her fiancé Floyd Umlor, and her sister, Edna Tutt; as well as her parents Benjamin and Dorcas Green. Surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law; Richard and Nancy Green, Robert and Joann Green and nieces and nephews. She was a life member of the Creston Post 3023 V.F.W. Funeral and committal services will be held Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at the Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, Alt and Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan D, NW, with interment to follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet her family at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Please visit Ann's personal memory page at www.lifestorynet.com for more information, to leave a memory or sign the online register book.
