Thelma Hoogewind

Thelma T. Hoogewind, age 97,went home to be with her Lord on July 21, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Hoogewind; and her brothers, Arthur and Howard Roobol.

Thelma is survived by her daughter, Cindi Cook (Dale), as well as many nieces and nephews. She was a long time member at Calvary Church where she also volunteered in the kitchen and worked as an on-call receptionist for many years. She finally retired at the age of 90.

Born nearly a century ago, she witnessed extraordinary changes in the world, yet remained constant in who she was – kind, strong, faithful, and determined. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, who preceded her in death 50 years ago. Though widowed for half her life, she carried on with remarkable resilience, grace, and independence.

A loving mother and cherished friend, she shared a very special bond with her only child. The two of them shared many great adventures. Whether it was traveling, or just their weekly date for breakfast and a trip to Hobby Lobby, they always had fun together.

Above all, she was a woman of deep Christian faith. Her trust in the Lord guided her throughout her life. Even in her later years, while experiencing severe pain, she found strength by reflecting on Jesus’ suffering on the cross, often expressing that her own suffering was incomparable to His. That gave her great strength, courage, and peace.

She will be remembered for her kindness, her quiet humor, her strong will, and her unwavering devotion to her family and faith. Now reunited with her husband, she rests peacefully in the presence of the Lord. She will be deeply missed each and every day.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026 at 11 AM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home - Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive. Friends are invited to visit and share memories on Sunday from 5-7 PM and for a time immediately following the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Faith Hospice, Mackenzie Animal Sanctuary, or to Calvary Undenominational Church.
