Nic, OP, Sister Michael Anne of Grand Rapids, MI (born Catherine Nic in Petoskey, MI) died on August 3, 2022. She was 95 years old and a Dominican Sister for 76 years.

Sister Michael Anne received a B.A. from St. Joseph Collegeon the Rio Grande, Albuquerque with a major in art and an M.A. in the Teaching of Art from Western Michigan University.

Sister Michael Anne served as a teacher at St. Joseph School, West Branch; St. Sebastian, Byron Center; St. Joseph, Wright; St. Joseph, Pewamo; St. Anne, Alpena; St. Peter, Douglas; St. Basil, South Haven; Holy Rosary, Bay City; St. Alfred, Taylor; St. Alphonsus, Grand Rapids; and St. Francis, Muskegon. She was also missioned at Our Lady of Belen, New Mexico.

After Sister Michael Anne retired from teaching, she volunteered at Kent Community Hospital doing clerical work and then as Office Manager/Assistant for Development Projects for the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary of the Woods, IN. She next served as a receptionist first at Marywood and then at Aquinas College and later as a library assistant and volunteer worker at Marywood.

Her beautiful paintings of the natural beauty around her, her lovely calligraphy and handiwork grace our halls. She loved drawing, painting, visiting art museums and galleries, sewing, and reading. She once said, “Art stores and bookstores draw me like a magnet!”

Tall, quiet, and gentle by nature, she had a lilting laugh that was yet heard even as injury and illness necessitated an end to her independence and mobility. She accepted these limitations with remarkable equanimity, always grateful for visits and small gifts of maple fudge or other sweets.

Sister Michael Anne is surely enjoying the beauty of the greatest Artist of all as she is embraced by her loving God for eternity.

Sr. Michael Anne is survived by her brothers John (Judy) Nic, Muskegon, MI and Martin (Diane) Nic, Fruitport, MI; nieces, nephews, many friends and members of her Dominican Community.

In an effort to protect our vulnerable population from the Covid-19 virus a private Funeral Mass with vaccinated immediate family members and Sisters will be celebrated at Chapel of the Word, Marywood on Tuesday, August 9. Masks are required.

Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Michael Anne Nic’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
