Life Story / Obituary
Martin Jacob Kloostra, age 83, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, hard work, and deep connection to family and community.
The fourth son, born on May 10, 1942 to Anne and Seiger Kloostra. Marty loved his brothers Roger, Ken, Jerry, and Donald and his only sister JoAnne. He loved telling stories of growing up with them in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Marty lived a full and meaningful life rooted in his love for God, his family, and time on the water. He found a special kind of calm and appreciation for God’s creation on Lake Michigan and winters in San Diego, California.
Marty proudly served his country in the United States Navy, carrying that sense of duty, discipline, patriotism, and pride with him throughout his life.
An iron worker in his younger years, Marty later began his own construction company and built not only a successful career, but also a lasting impact on the footprint of Grand Rapids.
Above all, Martin Kloostra was a family man. He shared 25 years of marriage with his loving first wife, Nancy Kloostra, who preceded him in death. He later found love again and married his current and beloved wife, Janet Kloostra who survives him. The two of them have shared more than three decades filled with warm memories and adventures together.
He was a proud, kind, and respected father and grandfather, forming strong, meaningful relationships with each of his children and grandchildren. His presence was a steady source of encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love. He had a gift for making everyone feel special—especially through his unforgettable hugs, which were known for being big, warm, genuine, and always worth coming back for.
Marty had a deep love for playing his trumpet. It brought him joy throughout his life, and those who knew him imagine that he is now playing once again—this time among the angels.
He is survived by Lisa (Garry) Coy, Kelly (Arden) Balkema, Kraig (Brigid) Kloostra, Rusty (Laura) Ross, Robin (Hank) Stelzl, and by his grandchildren Nichole, Connor, Sophie, Poppy, Kole, Erin, Tara, Luke, Brady, Logan, Jake and Max. He was preceded in death by his son Tim Kloostra.
A life so richly lived leaves behind countless memories and a lasting imprint on all who knew him. Marty will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his faith, his kindness, his strength, and loving nature.
A memorial service will be held at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home - Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel on Saturday, May 9 at 12 Noon. Friends are invited to stay (or come if you were not able to attend the service) and celebrate Mart’s life with his family immediately following the service until 3 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice or Mel Trotter Mission.
