Life Story / Obituary

Marie Werner of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was born May 6th, 1929. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family into Jesus’ loving arms, March 2, 2023, at the age of 93.

She married Charles R. Werner on November 24, 1950. They had 4 daughters: Susan (Paul) Steinbrecher, Elizabeth (James) Paauw, Jean Werner, and Maria (Donavan) Brouwer.

Marie spent most summer months in Naubinway, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, at the family cabin on the Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club, being recognized as a Trailblazer Member after 40+ years. During winters, she spent several months residing at their condo on Marco Island, Florida.

Marie was known as loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was blessed with a beautiful singing voice, filled leisure time playing tennis, sewing, watching financial markets, puzzle-making and enjoying the family dogs. Marie was active in a diverse array of volunteerism including missions, YMCA/YWCA and 4H.

As a lifetime member of LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church, Marie and her husband had a love for their Lord and spreading his Word. They supported and encouraged missionaries, hands on, in the locales where they worked. She passed on scripture in everyday life to her daughters and to future generations. She spent years in prayer before helping establish a Grand Rapids area, Bible Study Fellowship International, and was active in the local leadership for many years.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Werner, and great grandson Miles Paauw. Marie is survived by 4 children, 14 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.

Celebrations of Marie’s life are planned to be held by the family in Grand Rapids at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home-Alt and Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Dr NW, Saturday March 18th from 4-6pm and in Naubinway this summer.

Her resting place will be in the Naubinway Cemetery next to her husband.

Memorials may be made to Bible Study Fellowship in Marie’s name at https://www.bsfinternational.org/support/ or to the charity of your choice.
