Life Story / Obituary

Joyce Richert Sper, 92, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, peacefully passed from this earth into her eternal Home on Sunday December 18, 2022. She is now at rest in the loving arms of her Savior and Lord.

Born in Marion, South Carolina, on July 9, 1930, Joyce was the daughter of Joseph and Dimock Richert and sister of her older brother Joe. The family later moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where Joyce attended and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Norman Sper.

Together, Joyce and Norman raised their three children, David, Melanie, and Paul, in Burbank, California, before moving to Northridge and then to Camarillo. In their later years, they settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at Rest Haven Homes.

Joyce was a strong believer in Christ whose faith sustained her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her husband Norman (in 2011), and her grandson Jonathan (in 2017). She will be deeply missed by her three children: David (Ginger), Melanie Winter, and Paul (Angela); seven grandchildren: Jarred (Sara), Sarah McLellan (Andrew), Stephen (Cindy), Austin (Sheridan), Karsen Sawyer (Winston), Colton, and Peyton; and five great grandchildren: Avery, Maya, Lucas, Winona, and Asher. She will also be missed by the staff and residents at Rest Haven Homes, where she lived since 2007.

She will always be remembered as a kind, caring, and sweet woman who loved and served the Lord with all her heart. Finally free from her crippling pain of rheumatoid arthritis, we are comforted knowing that her body is fully restored and that she is reunited with her loved ones and fellow believers who have passed before her.

A celebration of Joyce's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joyce's memory to Rest Haven Homes.
