Jose Simon Berrones Ornelas lived a full life anchored in faith in God and love for his family. Simon embraced every moment in life and will be remembered for his selflessness with which he gave of himself to those around him. Humility was his defining characteristic, always putting other’s needs before his. A friend, father, grandfather, and follower of Jesus, he will be remembered with kindness by those who were blessed to know him.

On October 28, 1930, Leongina Ornelas (mother) and Lorenzo Berrones (father) welcomed their first son, Simon, in the small town of El Milagro, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. While details related to his young formative years are scarce, Simon faced many challenges, including losing his mother at the young age of eight and living through the thick of the Great Depression and World War II. These humble beginnings helped shape him and his gratitude and appreciation for life.

The year 1948 turned to be one of the most significant of Simon’s life. It was during this time when he decided to give his life to serving Jesus Christ. The teachings of faith, love, humility and service to others became the pillars of his life, embracing them fully in his daily life. It was these characteristics and values that led to Simon meeting his life partner Maria Consuelo Moreno Maldonado at his church, Iglesia Evangelica Cristiana Espiritual. On June 7, 1956 Simon and Consuelo vowed to faithfully live with each other and to jointly live their life for Jesus Christ. Their joint faith and trust in the Lord were to serve them as a guiding light in the years to come.

Their first test of faith for the newlyweds came in 1957 when Simon and Consuelo’s first-born son, Ezequiel, passed away unexpectedly one year after born. In the midst of great pain, Simon’s prayer to his God was to give him as many children as he desired. On September 14, 1959, his prayers were answered when Consuelo gave birth to a second son, naming him Ezequiel, in gratitude to the Lord who according to Simon, had given them back their first child. The couple went on to welcome nine additional lives into their home and hearts, including one additional son (Saul) and eight daughters (Elvia, Graciela, Oralia, Sylvia, Carolina, Elvira, Imelda and Nahomi).

While Simon and Consuelo led a joyful life in Mexico, including owning a small grocery store in the town of El Huizache, San Luis Potosi, the promise of a better life for his family led Simon to bring his family to America, having already worked many years in the U.S. under the Braceros Program. While no university degrees or honors would hang on the walls of his home, his calloused hands would serve as proof of the work and dedication to giving more to those he loved and treasured.

At the age of 83, Simon would face yet another test of faith when he was diagnosed with cancer. During this time, his faith would shine like gold. In the middle of his battle he said the following words, “Never question the will of God. He is my God and I love him. Everything he does is perfect.” In response, his God answered him with a full recovery, gifting him the opportunity to create many more memories with those he treasured and to continue to serve the Lord.

Among the many memories he leaves behind, his kindness and spirit of giving will always be in the hearts of those who knew him. If you ever visited the Berrones family home, you were assured to walk out with something; a bag of groceries, dinner for the next day, a bottle of water, or at minimum a full stomach from whatever food was on hand that day.

The world loses a treasure while heaven gains another. We hope to find comfort in continuing his legacy of love and faith through the practice of Jesus Christ’s teachings.

Jose Simon Berrones Ornales, age 90, of Grand Rapids, was called before the Lord’s presence on December 16, 2020 where we’re assured Jesus welcomed him with the words “Well done, good and faithful servant”. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo (Leongina) Berrones; sisters Octaviana and Tomasita Berrones Ornelas. Simon is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Maria Consuelo Berrones Moreno; children, Ezequiel (Sandra) Berrones, Elvia (Sergio) Carrillo, Graciela (Hipolito) Berrones, Saul Berrones, Oralia (Primitivo) Romero, Sylvia (Ubaldo) Berrones, Carolina (Fabio) Perez, Elvira (Angel) Alvarado, Imelda (Pablo) Martinez, Nahomi Berrones; grandchildren, Ezequiel Jr. (Esmeralda) Berrones, Jonathan (Vanessa) Berrones, Joshua (Monica) Berrones, Matthew Berrones, Melissa Berrones, Sergio Jr. (Fabiola) Carrillo, Aaron (Rosa) Carrillo, Karen (Richard) Felix, Arely Carrillo, Ashley Huerta, Itzel Huerta, Melissa Romero, Samuel Romero, Natalie Romero, Janet (Alberto) Perez, Cynthia Perez, Ubaldo Jr. Perez, Abraham (Ruth) Perez, Nohemi Perez, Obed Perez, Yudith Perez, Israel Perez, Enoc Alvarado, Cindy Alvarado, Lisette Alvarado, Nathaneal Alvarado, Pablo Jr. Martinez, Carolyn Martinez, Jacklyn Martinez, Jocelynn Martinez, Katelyn Martinez, Ethan Martinez; and 21 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Feligonio Berrones Ornelas and Elvira (Hipolito) Berrones Ornelas, and many nieces and nephews.

José Simón Berrones Ornelas vivió una vida plena anclada en su fe en Dios y el amor a su familia. Simón abrazó cada momento de la vida y será recordado por su abnegación con la que se entregó a quienes lo rodeaban. La humildad era su característica definitoria, siempre anteponiendo las necesidades de los demás a las suyas. Amigo, padre, abuelo y seguidor de Jesús, será recordado con bondad por aquellos que tuvieron la bendición de conocerlo.

Fueron estas características y valores los que llevaron a Simón a conocer a su compañera de vida María Consuelo Moreno Maldonado en su iglesia, la Iglesia Evangélica Cristiana Espiritual. El 7 de junio de 1956, Simón y Consuelo prometieron vivir fielmente el uno con el otro y vivir juntos su vida para Jesucristo. Su fe y confianza unidas en el Señor les serviría de luz guía en los años venideros.

Su primera prueba de fe para los recién casados llegó en 1957 cuando el primogénito de Simón y Consuelo, Ezequiel, falleció inesperadamente un año después de su nacimiento. En medio de un gran dolor, la oración de Simón a su Dios era que le diera tantos hijos como quisiera. El 14 de septiembre de 1959 sus oraciones fueron contestadas cuando Consuelo dio a luz a un segundo hijo, nombrandolo Ezequiel, en agradecimiento al Señor que según Simón, les había devuelto su primer hijo. La pareja pasó a dar la bienvenida a nueve vidas adicionales en su hogar y corazones, incluido un hijo adicional (Saul) y ocho hijas (Elvia, Graciela, Oralia, Sylvia, Carolina, Elvira, Imelda y Nahomi).

Mientras Simón y Consuelo llevaban una vida feliz en México, incluida la propiedad de una pequeña tienda de abarrotes en el pueblo de El Huizache, San Luis Potosí, la promesa de una vida mejor para su familia llevó a Simón a traer a su familia a Estados Unidos, habiendo trabajado ya muchos años en los Estados Unidos bajo el Programa Braceros. Si bien ningún título universitario u honores colgarán de las paredes de su casa, sus manos callosas servirían como prueba del trabajo y la dedicación para dar más a quienes amaba y atesoraba.

A la edad de 83 años, Simon se enfrentaría a otra prueba de fe cuando le diagnosticaron cáncer. Durante este tiempo, su fe brillaría como el oro. En medio de su batalla dijo las siguientes palabras: “Nunca cuestiones la voluntad de Dios. Él es mi Dios y lo amo. Todo lo que hace es perfecto ". En respuesta, su Dios le respondió con una recuperación completa, dándole la oportunidad de crear muchos más recuerdos con aquellos a quienes atesoraba y de continuar sirviendo al Señor.

Entre los muchos recuerdos que deja, su amabilidad y espíritu de generosidad siempre estarán en el corazón de quienes lo conocieron. Si alguna vez visitaron el hogar de la familia Berrones, era seguro que saldrían con algo; una bolsa de mandado, la cena para el día siguiente, una botella de agua o, como mínimo, un estómago lleno de cualquier alimento que estaba disponible ese día.

El mundo pierde un tesoro mientras que el cielo gana otro. Esperamos encontrar consuelo al continuar su legado de amor y fe a través de la práctica de las enseñanzas de nuestro señor Jesucristo.
