John Lawson Groth, died December 20, 2022 at the age of 73. He was one of six children born to Geraldine (Fik) and Harold Groth. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Sandie Scherphorn and Patty Churchard. He will be remembered by his daughter Jennifer Kelly (Mike) and five grandchildren - Reece, Rylan, Caden, Abigail and Sadie, whom he lovingly called his peanut girl; his sister Mary Johnson; sister Carol Baribeau; brother Tom Groth (Barb), many nephews and nieces, and recent ex-wife Angie Groth.

He attended and graduated from Union High School in 1967. In his early life, he was proud to have served in the Army National Guard for 6 years, always ready to be called to duty. He continued his education at Kendall School of Art & Design, and was quite talented with painting and design. This led him to a job designing and decorating the windows of downtown department stores. He enjoyed painting as a past time throughout his life. He went on to a career as an Engineer for Steelcase and worked there up until his retirement. He was a dedicated employee, always wanting to continue working to make things as efficient as possible. He missed his parents fiercely, and loved family history, relishing time spent at their family cottage on Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed fishing with his brother Tom, and eventually taking and teaching all of the kids how to fish. He cared for and fed ALL animals. He loved cars from a young age, and took pride in painting an old Plymouth into an American flag. He was fascinated with European cars, owning several throughout his life with Alfa Romeo being his favorite. He founded the club West Michigan Alfa Romeo Owners, Inc. gathering together like-minded Alfa lovers. He was also an incredible home chef, delighting friends and family with his delicious recipes and food.

As he encountered many health challenges over the past several months, he was cared for and loved by his daughter, Jennifer and sister, Mary. They were able to experience a new and softened relationship, led by gratitude, and enjoyed many adventures and laughter this past year. They would like to thank the doctors and nurses of 5 South Oncology at Butterworth Hospital, who gave John the most excellent and compassionate care at the end of his life.

A memorial service / Celebration of Life / will take place on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at Third Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, located at 2060 Michigan Street NE, 49503. Visitation with family will be one hour prior to the service (at 10:00 am) and also following the service.
