James Balk

James G. Balk Jr. of Grand Rapids, MI went to be with his Lord and Savior in the comfort of his home and in the company of his family on September 7, 2022. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1943 to James Sr. and Mary [Bouterse] Balk. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Betty Jane [White] as well as by his sisters-in-law, Marilyn Hanenberg and Michelle Balk. Jim is survived by his daughters, Deborah Balk, Cynthia (Bradd) Pierce, Denise Pickem and Carrie White; grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan, Kyle, Gage, Courtney, Trenton, Ilana and Jesse; brother-in-law, Robert Hanenburg; sister, Susan (Leroy) Heersink; and his brother, Thomas Balk. Jim graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and worked for General Motors, retiring after 40 years. Jim was a faithful member of Bethany Reformed, Sunshine Community, and most recently, New Community Church. Although he seemed to be a man of few words (huh!), Jim could easily talk for hours about his favorite topics and pastimes. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2022, 12:00 PM at New Community Church, (2340 Dean Lake Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505) with Rev. Lewis Vander Meer officiating. The family will be at the church to greet friends and relatives prior to the service beginning at 11:00 AM. Jim will be laid to rest next to Betty in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
