On Sunday, August 16, 2020, our mother, Ellen H. Herbig left us at the age of 89 years. Ellen was born December 27, 1930 in Muskegon, Michigan to Ralph and Mildred Kooi. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Herbig, who also lived 89 years. Ellen is survived by her brother Ralph Kooi and his wife Connie. She has left a beautiful legacy to her children; Lynne (John) Houlihan, Randall Brooks, Beth Brooks-Armstrong, Kent (Sue) Brooks, John Brooks, Andrew (Marcia) Brooks, Pamela (Robert) Czlonka, Zachary (Nancy) Herbig, Melissa (Len) Crane, and Amy (Tyrone) Williams. She has 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and she leaves many nieces, nephews and long lasting friends. Ellen graduated from Muskegon High School. After raising her children, she worked in the records department of the Grand Rapids Police Department for 14 years retiring in 1988. Ellen and Don were devout Catholics. They were members of the Snowbird Club, the Greatest Generation, and the Michigan Club of their retirement community of Timber Pines, Spring Hill, Florida. A memorial mass has been scheduled to take place on September 10, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, (2230 Lake Michigan Dr. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504) followed by internment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
