Derek Gibson

Derek Richard Gibson of Tama, Iowa age 39, died Monday, October 19, 2020 in Grand Rapids, MI.

Derek was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on July 28, 1981 to David and Lorraine Gibson. He graduated from South Tama High School in Tama, Iowa in 1999. He attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Math and Engineering.

Derek grew up loving sports, he played baseball and basketball in high school, and went on to play basketball in college. He also had a passion for building and creating, he spent countless days in his shop building furniture and gifts for family. Fishing was a hobby he loved also, especially taking his nephew Kye and niece Ava out on the boat. Derek loved to joke, spend time with his family & friends, and was the uncle all the kids loved to play and joke with.

A huge part of his adult life was spent living in Las Vegas, where the rest of his immediate family followed him. He loved the city and his job at New York New York Hotel. He met many lifelong friends there, and shares stories that not many people would have the opportunity to experience.

He is survived by his parents, Dave and Lorraine Gibson, Brother and Sister-in-law Kyle and Jennifer Gibson, Nephew Kye Gibson, Niece Ava Gibson, Maternal Grandparents, Dwayne and Pam Wood, Uncle and Aunt, Dave and Beth Wood, Cousins Trevor Wood and spouse Addy Wood, Tanner Wood, and Trey Wood.

Paternal Grandparents Richard and Sharen Gibson, Uncle and Aunt, Paul and Stephanie Gibson, Cousins Sean Gibson, Brandon Gibson (children Lexis and Kaelynn), Colby Gibson (child Vynzent), Zachary Gibson, and Brady Gibson, Aunt and Uncle, Lisa (Gibson) and Al Sheahan, Cousin Courtney Sheahan, Aunt and Uncle, Marsha (Gibson) and Tony Dunsmoor, Cousins Nate Dunsmoor (child Kinzley) Kelsey Adkins, Matt Dunsmoor.

There will be no funeral services, however there will be a celebration of life in the Spring of 2021 at home in Iowa. Details will be forthcoming from the family.
