Bernee V. Mazurek (nee Waskelis), age 96 of Grand Rapids, passed away December 3, 2020. Bernee was a proud Lithuanian and she married John, of Ukrainian heritage, on July 3, 1948. In addition to her husband, Bernee was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Waskelis; brothers Frank (Ann), Joseph and John Waskelis; sisters Rita Griffin, Mary (Les) Stein and Anne Tuffelmire; brothers-in-law Adam (Stella) and Joseph (Ella) Mazurek; and sisters-in-law Mary (William) Kalushka and Anna (Peter) Mikita. Bernee is survived by her children Priscilla, Dennis, David, Brian (Gail); granddaughter, Melissa; sister-in-law Betty Waskelis and nieces and nephews Frank (Mary) Waskelis, Sandra Haggerty, Gayle (Phillip) Horton, Marianne Geluso, Steven Tuffelmire, Annie Lee (Herbert) Brown, Janet Marsiglia, Barbara Green, Constance Mikita, Patricia (Jerry) Berry and Peter (Judy) Buhay. Berneeā€™s family will always appreciate Lorraine McCrary for her remarkable caregiving during the last five years.

Bernee was a 1943 graduate of Catholic Central High School. She retired from General Motors after 31 years of service. Bernee enjoyed cooking, gardening, walking, traveling, and watching Tiger Baseball. She was loyal, strong-willed, concerned about the welfare of others, and generous to a fault. As recognized by all who knew her, Bernee possessed a brilliant mind that, coupled with her quick wit, sense of humor, keen observations and common sense, made her unforgettable. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 11 a.m., at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with interment to follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to visit together at the church beginning at 10 a.m. For those who wish, memorial contributions are suggested to either Vytautas Aid Society, 1300 Hamilton Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504, or the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 456 Cherry Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
