Life Story / Obituary
Richard Bronkema
1933 – September 10, 2024
Richard Bronkema, 91, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024. Born in 1933, Richard was a devoted family man, a successful salesman, a United States Army veteran, and a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers.
Richard proudly served his country, overcoming a near life-ending injury during basic training at Fort Knox. He was stationed in Alaska during his service and, after returning from active duty, met the love of his life, Diane, while cruising in downtown Grand Rapids. They went on to share many wonderful years together before her passing.
He was a proud Dutch man, often sharing his favorite saying, "If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much." Richard’s heritage was a source of pride, and he enjoyed celebrating it with family and friends.
He is survived by his children: Randy Bronkema, Rana Garner (Michael), and Holly Michaels (Scott); his beloved grandchildren: Ryan Bronkema, Joanna Bronkema, Charles Bronkema (Allison), Devin Michaels, Sonja Michaels, and Kona Michaels; and his great-grandchildren Charlie and Ricky. He is also survived by his sister Carol Kurlenda.
Richard spent 58 years as a dedicated salesman for Rowerdink Inc., retiring in 2017. Throughout his career, he formed lasting friendships with his customers, many of whom became like family. He cherished these connections and took great pride in his work.
A passionate fan of the Detroit Tigers, Richard rarely missed a game and followed the team through triumphs and challenges.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Elizabeth; wife, Diane; his sons, Rick and Ron; his sister, Bonnie Stowell; Brothers-in-law Daniel Kurlenda and Earl Stowell; and his nephew, Timothy Kurlenda.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the VA and the VA Home Based Primary Care team for the excellent care they provided to Richard. Special thanks to his VA nurse, Jennifer, who worked tirelessly to ensure he received the care he needed, and to his VA caregiver, Linda, and the care team at Cornerstone Care, whose compassionate care and presence brought great comfort to Richard during his final days. The family is also grateful to the care team from Coroscare, who took wonderful care of him at his residence, Story Point Grand Rapids West, and to the nurses of Corsocare Hospice, who made Richard comfortable in his last days and treated him with dignity.
Additionally, the family would like to thank his lifelong friend from church, Sandy Baird, for driving Richard to numerous medical appointments over the past few years and always being there for him with friendship and love.
In accordance with Richard’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Instead, family and friends will gather in October to enjoy his favorite snacks of chocolate milk and donuts.Richard’s legacy is one of hard work, kindness, and loyalty to those he loved. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.Memorial contributions can be made to the Agewell Services Meals on Wheels program in Muskegon at agewellservices.org
