It started in the sand

like many great adventures do. Unmapped

dotted lines that will connect

through a van ride and a barbecue with a stranger

hardly knowing, but maybe fully knowing

that your best friend, your lifetime

is with you in the park, the same one that your kids

will one day explore with your father.

We'll move to a small house on Benjamin Street,

after advocating for your tiny family in a trailer.

Dad's hands will leave bars of soap dirty at night,

days spent in ceilings with heat bottled up

like a dozen genies. Mom, You'll take night

classes, typing courses, accounting.

You'll be a teller in a bank, which will leave you a habit

of organizing dollars by size and direction

Our line will turn unexpectedly - although

quite expectedly as I now understand things -

to a quiet town with good schools, big and small

forests, foundational front yard trees,

creeks that rush and a church that you'll fight

to be a leader in - eventually letting you

take the offering but in the process change

the title from deacon to offering attendant,

lest you feel too close to God.

But your house will be open to

family, friends, friends of friends,

refugees, and if you ask me

you'll be as close to God as any of us can get.

Disney trips, gator land, sleeping through the smokies

Summer gardening, giant pumpkins, long slow loops

down the rockies. Broken Wings, Neil Diamond,

Christian Rock. Camping in a pop-up

Probably hating camping in a pop-up.

A castle in Canada with a hidden door

that you'll discover with Dad

and rediscover with us.

Marriages, dancing, new life. Grandchildren

will carry the love you taught, your legacy.

You'll make hats - dog hats, lady bug hats, rainbow hats, lovely hats.

You'll swim until they tire out and read stories,

the long Bernstein Bear kind

that only a Grandma can deeply enjoy

Lucy will snuggle close

Eleanor will give you a kiss

Matteo will be held, he'll be adored

So, Mom, know that the love that started

in the sand, that squeaky Holland quartz

has now spilled its dotted line over the horizon
