Life Story / Obituary
With a lifetime that spanned over ninety one wonderful years, Eunice Florip lived each day with grace and boundless faith. She was a constant source of strength, even in the most difficult of times, and she poured her heart and soul into caring for those around her in a gentle way only she could. Nothing brought Eunice greater joy than holding her friends and family close. Her love for the Lord directed her path, and she was a shining role model of kindness and generosity for all who looked up to her, constantly giving of her time and talents to make the world a better place. Deeply missed, Eunice will be forever loved and cherished.
The early 1930s are remembered as some of the most tumultuous years for those living in the United States. The Great Depression was in full swing, and families all across the nation had to pull together to find a way to thrive in their time of need. Amid the difficulty, however, there was much happiness to be found in the household of Martin & Amanda (Walter) Merz of Conklin, Michigan, as they celebrated the arrival of their new baby girl. Born just a few days before Christmas on December 22, 1933, Eunice Edna joined the family as the youngest of the eight Merz children. She spent her earliest years in the family home in Conklin, raised alongside her seven older siblings, Martin, Walter, Earl, Flora, Esther, Gertrude, and Vera.
Eunice enjoyed a typical childhood of her generation filled with many wonderful memories. She was her father’s little girl, maybe even a bit spoiled. Eunice’s lifelong faith took root at a young age, and she was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conklin, joining the family of believers. In 1941, the Merz family moved to Bridgman, Michigan. Eunice often her mother with the cooking and canning in the kitchen. She loved her dad’s sweet corn that he grew himself in their garden. As the family grew to include nieces and nephews, “Aunt Eunie” took every chance to dote on them and loved bringing them to the beach. Eunice attended local schools and graduated from St. Joseph High School, eager to see what the future held.
Eunice’s father and several of her siblings were teachers, so it was no surprise when Eunice decided to follow in their footsteps. She attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois, then went on to earn her master’s degree from Northwestern University. Eunice began her career teaching in Melrose Park in the Chicago area, spending five years there. After returning to Bridgman, she started teaching at Immanuel Lutheran School, where her father taught and served as the principal. Eunice would teach kindergarten for half of each day, then take her father’s classroom to lighten his load. She thrived in her role as a teacher and loved her students as if they were her own children.
Of all the things Eunice loved in life, there was nothing that was more important than her family. She looked forward to the big family reunion each year, and she always made sure to stay in touch with her siblings with visits or regular phone calls. Eunice adored her nieces and nephews. She doted on them but never showed favoritism, loving them all equally. Later in life, Eunice was overjoyed to find love with Pastor Philip Florip. The two were married on May 17 of 1987 and settled down in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they led the Christ the King Church for several years. With her marriage to Philip, Eunice’s family grew to include his daughter, Pam, and his grandchildren. Eunice always considered herself blessed beyond measure to be surrounded by so many loved ones.
All who knew Eunice would certainly agree that she was fiercely determined and independent, never letting anything hold her back. In her 70s, she served as a missionary in Jamaica for 5 years, teaching the children of the other missionaries there. Eunice also kept busy with plenty of volunteer work. She spent her time serving at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, the Welcome Home for the Blind, Rest Haven Homes, and St. James Lutheran, reading books to kids. Eunice was social and outgoing, and she possessed a genuine love for others that allowed her to serve humbly wherever life took her.
When reflecting on the life of Eunice Florip, it is easy to see both her unwavering strength and her unconditional love for her family. She exemplified what it meant to follow faithfully after the Lord she loved so much. A devoted sister, aunt, and wife for six precious years, Eunice treasured her family and held them close whenever she got the chance. Her heart of gold and willingness to go above and beyond to care for others allowed her to impact countless lives for the better. Although she is already so greatly missed, Eunice leaves behind a priceless legacy that her loved ones will be proud to carry on in her footsteps.
