Life Story / Obituary
A radiant presence in the lives of all who were blessed to know and love her, Janet Heindrichs truly understood the secret to a life well lived. She was never afraid to speak her mind, though she did so with grace and wisdom. Nothing brought Janet greater joy than surrounding herself with her family and friends. Her passion for learning inspired so many, and her legacy is one of kindness, compassion, and selflessness. Dearly loved, Janet will be greatly missed and forever remembered by those who knew her best.
The early 1940s are among some of the most tumultuous years in history as WWII raged overseas. Here at home in the United States, many watched with held breath, waiting anxiously to see if America would enter the war. Big band and swing music was at the height of its popularity, and radio shows were a key source of entertainment. It was during this influential time that Roy and Mary (Stoddard) Chamberlain were awaiting the arrival of their first baby. On May 19, 1941, Roy and Mary were visiting Mary’s parents in Ionia, Michigan, when their daughter made her unexpected entrance into the world. Janet Carolyn was the oldest of two Chamberlain kids and soon became an older sister to her little brother, Roy Jr.
Growing up in the family home on Jefferson in Wyoming, Michigan, Janet was a typical girl of her generation in many ways. She loved running wild through the outdoors and playing with friends. Both of Jan’s parents were teachers, so she was raised to appreciate learning and build strong study habits. Jan attended local Godwin schools and was an excellent student. She was involved in the school band as well. Though the Chamberlain family didn’t travel much, Jan had fond memories of visiting New York and Washington D.C. with her parents. She shared a love for football with her father and attended many Michigan games with him for many years.
Even after graduating high school, Jan’s education was far from over. She continued to pursue further knowledge through the years. Jan took classes at Grand Rapids Community College, Davenport College, and Aquinas College. She went on to earn bachelor’s degrees in both art history and English literature, as well as her Master’s in business. Later on, Jan would continue taking classes as a member of a lifelong learning program.
Jan’s career began working in a couple of department stores and as a gift wrapper for Sears. She held various jobs over the years, including as a factory nurse at GM, at Aves Advertising, Baker Furniture, and Behler Young. Jan had an eye for decor, and no matter where she was, she was able to put those talents to good use. She even won an award for her window designs. For 36 years ending in retirement, Jan built a fulfilling career for herself working as a director of client relations at Miller Johnson.
Not to be forgotten was the moment Jan met Robert Heindrichs, the man who would quickly capture her heart. She and Bob were a perfect match in every way and loved being social together. Together, Jan and Bob raised their two daughters, Mary and Teri, on the Northeast side of Grand Rapids. Janet was an amazing cook, and she always made time on Sundays to prepare a delicious five-course meal. Some of the family’s favorite dishes included her Hungarian goulash, amaretto chicken, and chicken cognac. Janet’s home was always lively and full. She thrived as a hostess and loved entertaining, and she looked forward to hosting her elaborate Derby parties every year.
Later in life, Jan was enjoyed being a grandmother and even a great-grandmother. She did her best to instill in them her thirst for knowledge and desire for adventure, and she loved introducing them to new experiences and sharing her love for the arts. When they weren’t with their family, Jan and Bob enjoyed traveling the world together. She would research before each trip, learning everything she could about the area, the people, and the culture. Janet was especially fascinated by U.S. presidents and was able to visit many of the presidential museums over the years. She always had a fun story to share from one of her memorable trips.
Never one to sit still for long, Jan often volunteered in her community. She was especially drawn to nurturing the arts, including theater, opera, and the symphony. Jan was a dedicated member of the Women’s City Club for 48 years, sometimes helping coordinate their bus trips. She was also a skilled gardner and was involved with several garden clubs. Janet was passionate about staying busy and involved, and there was no slowing her down. After caring for Bob until he passed away in 2021, Jan eventually made her home at Samaritas before settling in at Covenant Living of the Great Lakes, where she loved spending time with friends.
Kindhearted, humble, and always willing to go above and beyond to serve those around her, Janet Heindrichs was a powerful role model for all those who looked up to her. Her generosity touched so many lives in ways big and small, and as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she savored every chance to hold her loved ones close. Although life will not be the same without Janet here with us, her memory will be deeply cherished for many years to come.
Janet C Heindrichs, age 84 of Grand Rapids, passed away May 2, 2026. Jan was a lifelong learner and a passionate supporter of the arts, volunteering with the theater, symphony and opera as well as several others. She was also a longtime member of the Women’s City Club and together with her husband, Robert, they enjoyed vast social experiences and travel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her brother, Roy Warner Chamberlain Jr.
Jan is survived by her daughters Mary Grinwis (Robert Koopmans) and Teri (Randy Stegenga) Heindrichs; grandchildren Jacqueline (Ray) Albrecht, April (Jay) Alejos, Chad Grinwis (fiancee Mary Malec); great-grandchildren Melina and Rianna Alejos, Briella and Jacey Grinwis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Charles (Loretta) Heindrichs, Wanda Heindrichs, Karl (Sally) Heindrichs, Sharon (Herb) Fish; and several nieces and nephews.
Please join Jan's family as they celebrate her life on Friday, May 15, 2026 at a place that met so much to her: the Sweet House, 254 Fulton St E, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. A service will begin at 4:30 PM, followed by an open house gathering until 7 PM. Please feel free to come at any time throughout the evening.
