Life Story / Obituary
With a journey that spanned times of peace and war, plenty and want, grief and so much joy, Erminia Borgia kept her focus on what mattered most through it all: family, friends, and faith. Her generosity was limitless, and as a prayer warrior, she exemplified what it meant to follow after the Lord she loved. There was nothing that brought Mimi greater joy than spending time with her family, and she deeply savored each moment. She faced every challenge that came her way with grit, determination, and grace. Dearly loved, Mimi will be forever missed.
Mimi’s story began with her parents, Serafino and Antonia (Pizzola) Borgia. With their two daughters, Camilla and Santini, and one more on the way, the couple immigrated from their hometown in Italy to the United States. Serafino found work with the gypsum mine company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the family settled down in the company's boarding house. They lived alongside other immigrants that worked in the mines, many of whom happened to be family members or from the same area of Italy. It was on December 16 of 1930 that Mimi made her entrance into the world, joining Camilla and Santini in the Borgia family. She soon became an older sister herself to her two younger siblings, Teresa and Frank.
As a girl, Mimi enjoyed a typical childhood of her generation growing up in the era of the Great Depression. The roots of her faith were planted at St. James Church. The Borgia siblings attended the St. James school as well. From a young age, Mimi was especially close with her little sister, Teresa. They were the best of friends, inseparable at all times. Mimi received her high school education at Catholic Central, balancing her studies with a job at Peck Drugstore. The family purchased a small farm at 15 Maynard Street. Their home would become the backdrop for many holidays, celebrations, and family gatherings. Their large garden kept their family fed, and they were always eager to share their blessings with others.
In 1948, Mimi graduated from Catholic Central High School. She and Teresa began working together at Harrods Meat Packing Company, which later became known as Thornapple Valley. They would continue working together for the next 45 years, eventually earning first and second seniority. Mimi mainly worked in the cooler. She was a highly valued employee, known for her shining work ethic. Both Mimi and Teresa built many close friendships with coworkers over the years.
Mimi and Teresa were able to purchase a home together on Charlotte Avenue NW. Within their family, the two became known as “the Aunties” to their many beloved nephews and nieces. Mimi strove to be very involved in the lives of her niece and nephews, even teaching them how to drive. As a powerful role model for them, she instilled in them the importance of compassion and humility. Mimi and Teresa made it to every activity and special occasion. They also enjoyed hosting family celebrations and parties at their home. Family was truly the focus of Mimi’s life.
For over 20 years, Mimi nurtured a close relationship with her special friend, Bud. As his health began to decline, she was a constant source of support, caring for him until he passed away in 1996. Mimi’s empathy also allowed her to serve many in her church and her community. She was a charter member of Holy Spirit Church, and she was a key volunteer in the prayer ministry. Anyone in need could call the church’s prayer line with requests and concerns, and Mimi would be ready with a listening ear, a piece of encouragement, and a powerful prayer. Many people loved to call her directly, just for her prayer. Mimi lived out her faith in both word and deed each and every day. She would give someone the shirt off her back, and she held nothing back when it came to pouring into others.
Over the years, Mimi enjoyed traveling across the country and even around the world. She would often travel with her sister, Teresa, or with close friends. Mimi was able to attend the World’s Fair, and she also visited her family’s village in Italy multiple times. Mimi’s sense of fashion was just as lively and unique as she was. She was especially known for her accessories, though she would give her jewelry away on the spot if someone commented on how amazing it was.
As friends and family gather to reflect on the overflowing life of Erminia Borgia, it is easy to celebrate a woman who brightened the lives of so many in ways big and small. She gave freely of her time and energy, selflessly serving all those around her. A dedicated sister and aunt, Mimi’s greatest treasure was undoubtedly her family. Her insatiable zest for life was contagious, and her legacy is one of kindness and faith. Already so greatly missed, Mimi leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that her loved ones will forever hold close.
