Age 85, passed away September 6, 2019 with his loving family by his side. Dick was born on June 23, 1934 in Corsica, SD to the late Dick and Tena (Zomer) Spaans. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Nellie (Pete) Bouma, Herm (Clazina) Spaans, Cornie Spaans, Rev. John Spaans, Henry Spaans, Albert Spaans, James Spaans, Adrian Spaans, and Marvin Spaans. Dick worked for Kamminga Roodvoets for over 40 years, and he was an elder for 38 years at First Netherlands Reformed Congregation. Dick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Madelyn; their children, Dan (Tina) Spaans of Grand Rapids, Laurie (Bill) VanDenToorn of Marne, Dick A. (Julie) Spaans of Belding, Rebecca (Harold) Van Dyk of Grand Rapids, Diane (Bob) VanderZand of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Jordan (Lisa) Spaans, Megan Spaans, Kevin Spaans, Chris (Amy) VanDenToorn, Jessica VanDenToorn, Caylee VanDenToorn, Katelynne Spaans, Jennifer (Jake) Hall, Justin VanderZand, Alex VanderZand, Seth VanderZand, Ben VanderZand; great grandchildren, Evelyn, Natalie, Luke, and Meredith Spaans, James and Madelyn VanDenToorn. Also surviving are brothers, Leonard (Elizabeth) Spaans, Andrew (Doris) Spaans, Ben (Betty) Spaans; sisters-in-law, Pauline Spaans, Joanne Spaans, Martina (George) Feyter, Hermina VanVeldhuizen, Cathy Spaans, Elizabeth Spaans, Rosalie Spaans, Katherine Kuzniak, Betty (Paul) Kooyers, Joan Mast, Esther Dykstra; brothers-in-law, Neil (Liz) Boluyt, Dave (Mary) Boluyt; many nieces, nephews and special friends. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 10 AM at First Netherlands Reformed Congregation, 1261 Beckwith Ave NE. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, 1833 Plainfield Ave NE. Interment will be in Graceland Memorial Park.
